Route description
Route description

This 6 hour event enables all ability of runner to join in the fun. Walk, run, hike as many laps of the 5k course in 6 hours.

You can run one lap in 20 minutes, pick up your medal, flapjack and beer and go home! Alternatively you can head out on your 15th lap at 14:55 and finish in 6hr30 having covered over 50 miles! It’s completely up to you.

The course is generally flat with 2 longer climbs making up most of the elevation. Each lap has around 190ft of elevation, making the marathon distance just over 1600ft of elevation.

The course starts in Fermyn Country Park but the majority of the route is in the adjoining Fermyn Woods. The course is truly off-road with only a small section on the normal stone pathway that you'd expect in a country park. The section through the woods consists of some single track running, wide grassy paths and narrow woodland paths. It really is a beautiful course!

As is always the case, the toilet block is about 50m from the aid station on each lap.

Below are the number of laps you will have to complete for the various distances:

  • 50 Miles - 16 Laps
  • Marathon - 8 Laps
  • Half Marathon - 4 Laps

Frequently asked questions
FAQ
Is the Red Kite Challenge cup-less?
Yes. It's obviously good for the environment to reduce plastic use and general waste. You won't break a world record having to stop to fill a bottle of water or carry a hydration pack, but over a marathon distance it would probably add less than a minute to your time. Big Bear events will have water, isotonic drinks, tea and coffee and real Coca Cola for you, but to be clear, they won't supply disposable cups for drinks. You can buy a foldable cup from them on the day.
FAQ
Do I need to qualify for the Red Kite Challenge?
No, the idea with Big Bear events is that they are open for anyone and everyone to get out and test themselves. However, it is recommended that you do not bite off more than you can chew.
FAQ
Why is it called the Red Kite Challenge?
If you run and look up, you'll know why! Each time we've visited we've seen loads of red kites flying and there's a large statue of one within the country park. Hopefully they'll make an appearance with you all running through, they're truly magnificent birds.
