This brilliant event lets runners choose their own distance. The ~3 mile circuit around Salcey Forest makes for a great challenge, or a leisurely jog. Runners can push themselves to the limit by running the looped course non-stop until the 6 hours is up, or they can relax and complete just one.

Salcey Winter Challenge route

This is a flat course with minimal elevation changes. The route is along well-maintained pathways, mainly on crushed stone. Obviously being in the middle of a forest, the narrower ones are covered in tree detritus and can become a bit muddy, especially when wet.

The route covers 3.3 miles and is open for 6 hours. This event is about setting your own pace and seeing how many miles you can crack out in the beautiful setting that is Salcey Forest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the first running of this event?
Not really! We've had multiple 6-hour events at Salcey Forest over the last couple of years, but this is the first time we've had a series here.
Is this event cup-less?
Yes. It's obviously good for the environment to reduce plastic use and general waste. You won't break a world record having to stop to fill a bottle of water or carry a hydration pack, but over a marathon distance it would probably add less than a minute to your time. Big Bear events will have water, isotonic drinks, tea and coffee and real Coca Cola for you, but to be clear, they won't supply disposable cups for drinks. You can buy a foldable cup from them on the day.
Do I have to pay for parking?
Yes, you will have to pay ~£6 for the whole day of parking.
Where is this event?
This event takes place at Salcey Forest.
Do I need to qualify for this event?
No, the idea with these events is that anyone can take part. It is recommended that you are fit enough to take on the challenge you decide on the day, but you are encouraged to to push yourself.
Is there a medal for participating?
Yes, there will be finisher's medals for those participating.
Can I wear headphones?
Yes, because this event is a closed road race participants are able to wear headphones. However, please be aware of your surroundings at all times.

#5

Big Bear Events are ranked #5 in the UK out of 267 organizers

The majority of our events are challenge events - multi-lap races with a time limit rather than a set distance. This means people can run all different distances on the same day, making for a great atmosphere. Lapped events can get some negative feedback but our laps are around beautiful locations. We avoid out and back laps and coming back to the wonderful aid station (full of your requests) can be a good motivator. Whether it's your A race, you need to do some long training runs, you have a 100-mile ultra in a few weeks or you want to hammer out a quick 10k, our races allow everyone to get involved together. We’re also expanding our mid-week evening 10K series too. Keep an eye out for updates on these as we are continually adding more. Expect the same care and attention and in the same great locations!
