Selkie Henley Classic route

THE COURSE

The course is a unique, straight line, point-to point-swim (ie no turns) and takes advantage of the boomed course of the Henley Royal Regatta. The swim is upstream, the strength of the stream varies from year-to-year, ensuring that no two events are the same.

COURSE SPECIFICS

Water Temperature

The water temperature at the Classic depends upon both the outside temperature and the quantity of rainfall in the days and weeks running up to the event. It is therefore very difficult to predict.

Based on previous years, at the end of June, we would expect the water to be between 17 and 19 degrees centigrade.

WAVES

Wave 1 (Juniors & Sporting)

Select this wave if you are either a junior (14-17 on 28th June) or if you wish to swim at leisure or alongside friends.

Please note Junior swimmers will be set off slightly in advance of the sporting wave.

Wave 2

Select this wave if you comfortably average between 2 mins 15 secs and 2 mins 30 secs per 100m during a distance swim.

Wave 3

Select this wave if you comfortably average between 2 mins and 2 mins 15 secs per 100m during a distance swim.

Wave 4

Select this wave if you comfortably average between 1 min 45 secs and 2 mins per 100m during a distance swim.

Wave 5 (Performance)

Select this wave if you wish to race hard (likely to be in the top 100 swimmers) and average below 1min 45 secs per 100m during a distance swim.

RACE SCHEDULE
The Selkie Henley Classic swim has several wave options to choose from.

It is our aim to provide all swimmers with the best swimming experience possible within the available water time. Selecting the most appropriate wave for your ability based on the descriptions below will help us to achieve this.

0420 - WAVE 1 (Juniors & Sporting)

Select this wave if you are either a junior (14-17 on 30th June) or if you wish to swim at leisure or alongside friends.

Please note Junior swimmers will be set off slightly in advance of the sporting wave.

0450 - WAVE 2 & 3

Select this wave if you comfortably average between 2 mins and 2 mins 30 secs per 100m during a distance swim.

0515 - WAVE 4

Select this wave if you comfortably average between 1 min 45 secs and 2 mins per 100m during a distance swim.

0540 - WAVE 5 (Performance)

Select this wave if you wish to race hard (likely to be in the top 100 swimmers) and average below 1min 45 secs per 100m during a distance swim.

Wave times are provisional and may be subject to change

Teams -

There is one team competition. A team can be made up of any combination of male or female swimmers (but not elite) and any number. The four fastest times will qualify for the competition. Create or join a team during the entry process.

Choosing a time -

Swimming on the Henley Regatta course is a privilege and we are very grateful for the support we receive. In return we have to be clear of the river by 0630 so it is important that you select the correct wave based on your anticipated swim time.

Please remember that it is an upstream swim so be realistic with your time and err on the side of caution.

Elite Entrants -

In the 2020 Selkie Henley Classic, elite adult swimmers will be participating in the Performance wave. All swimmers that are 17 or under on the day of the race will swim in the Junior wave.

Wetsuits are optional for elite swimmers.

Timings & Arrival -

Full timings are given in the information pack. The general rule is to aim to arrive at the event venue around 90 minutes before your wave time.

Saturday Evening Registrations -

The venue will be open on Saturday afternoon for anyone who would like to register for the event early.

Saturday Supper -

There will be a supper available for campers and anyone staying locally. You can pre-order your supper when registering for the event, or you can log back into your entry to add on at a later date. Supper will cost £11.95 when pre-booked, £12.95 on-the-day, and includes 2 courses and a tea/coffee.

Kit List

Wetsuit Hire

There will be wetsuit hire for the day available through the event organiser and a kit partner. Wetsuits can be collected and returned at the event. If the hired suit is to your liking, you also have the option of buying it.

Volunteers
Henley Swim is pleased to welcome volunteers to help out at our events, and we are very grateful to everyone who has helped out in the past and played a vital part in making our events such a success.

If you would like to volunteer, there are a variety of opportunities and roles that you could assist with including venue set up, registration team, event marshal, food stop team, finish team, bag drop team and many more.

Our volunteers often return year-after-year, here are some of the reasons people give for volunteering:
– they want to experience the event before swimming
– it’s good for the CV
– they enjoy the camaraderie of the team and have made good friends
– they support open water swimming generally

If you would like to volunteer to be part of one of our events, please fill out the form or email [email protected] to find out more about what is involved. If you volunteer at one event (minimum 5 hours), you will receive a FREE entry into one of our other events (for a Thames Marathon entry, you qualify after volunteering at two events.)

    Did the Swim in 2019

Great event. Particular shout out to the events staff-incredibly helpful, friendly and smiling.... Even at 2am!!!
A good course for a less experienced river swimmer as it's a v straight wide course. The beginning in my wave (2.00-2.30min/100m) was very bunched up for some distance-which took a bit of the edge of enjoyment)-this was by far the most popular category.... Any way to split this group in future would probably help overall experience.

It was a great swim, the furthest I had ever done! Very early start but that's to be expected. If you park at the start don't forget you are going to have to walk all the way back to your car so be prepared for a walk along a tow path!
