After a 12 year absence we are pleased to announce that the Essex 20 is returning to Rochford in 2018.

Set to be held on 4th March it is 7 weeks before London and will give an ideal opportunity to “test” how the marathon training is going. It is not the same course for those that ran it in 2005 but a new spectator friendly 3 lap course which should present the opportunity for fast times.

2018 will see the third edition of the Inter County Match where the best endurance runners from Essex, Kent, Suffolk, Norfolk, Herts, Cambs, Beds and Sussex battle it out for individual and team honours. The race will also be Race 1 in the Essex Road Race Grand Prix for 2018.

Keeping with the philosophy of the past 4 years, Essex AA in conjunction with host club Southend AC, are keeping the entry fee at just £6 for affiliated runners who enter early (last year the race sold out by 8th November). No medal, no t-shirt, but a cup of tea/coffee for all runners.

The Essex 20 Mile route

Course Description – A 3 lap course around the rural country lanes around Rochford.

Event Details

The Essex 20 miles road race is held every year in March and is an ideal race to run in the build up to the London Marathon. However, it’s not just a training run as it has a long history.

The race is a mainstay of the Essex Road Running Championships and has perhaps the lowest entry fee for any 20 miles road race.

What’s Included

(1)To be eligible to enter the Essex Championship you need to either have been born in Essex or have been an Essex resident for at least 9 months.  In addition you cannot have competed in another county’s championship in the same year (eg. Suffolk / Kent, etc)

Runners will not qualify for Medals /prizes if they are not wearing the club kit of their first claim club in whose name they have entered.

Essex County(1) medals awarded to the first 3 affiliated runners in each of the following categories:-
Men:                Open, V40, V50, V60 and V70
Women:           Open, V35, V45, V55 and V65
Team medals:  First 3 Essex Mens / Ladies Teams

There will be no t-shirts or medals but free coffee or tea for each runner will continue.

On the day entries: Only if the limit of 600 has not been reached beforehand (note the race has been sold out the last 2 years).

Headphones – In line with UK race rules the wearing of headphones is forbidden during the race, as these may prevent you from hearing instructions from Marshals. If runners choose to ignore this advice they do so at their own risk and will be disqualified – race result removed.

Race Numbers – number collected on the day between 8.30am and 9.30am from race HQ

This was a brilliant course! With it being 3 of the same laps, its a lovely spectator course also. Marshals throughout and great support! Good venue.

Great race - a nice three lap scenic course which was well organised with regular water stations. Mostly flat with a few challenging hills (they feel steeper than they are after 18 miles!!). Would highly recommend and will be returning next year.

A great new course for the Essex 20. Reasonably flat as far as I'm concerned (543 ft elevation gain). Last year's event was cancelled due to snow so entries were deferred. While I am not usually a fan of races that have laps, and this course has 3 laps, I found this to be the perfect pre-marathon race. It allows you to practice speed, pacing, nutrition and hydration. It is also probably has the cheapest entry fee of any 20 mile race. However, this is due to no medals or Tech' T's. The Southend AC marshals were great yet it is a very rural route so don't expect crowds of support. Good parking, shelter, post-race massage etc. No bag drop (bags left at own risk) and unfortunately, the men's inside toilets had no toilet paper (perhaps bring your own!). I would certainly race here again in future.
