Backyard Ultra
Route information
Built on the site of the largest fortress in the UK, HMP Hellfire plays host to this unique Ultra.
The route starts from the main prison block, called Hell House, then passes through a small tunnel into the fortress’ revetment. This is where the prisoners will complete the majority of their exercise, just as the prisoners of yesteryear did. The rules of the event are simple; at 10:00 on the 4th of May, all prisoners will start their first 4.167 mile yard, referred to as ‘exercise’ and this will be repeated on the hour, every hour, until there is only one prisoner able to complete the 4.167 mile course.
The last prisoner able to complete the 4.167 mile exercise will be declared the winner and they will be awarded with the Governor’s Pardon. The last remaining prisoner will no longer be referred to by number, but by the title ‘Governor.’
There can only be one Governor, everyone else will be classified as DNF.

Cut Off Times
You have one hour to complete each 4.167 exercise. If you are not in the next starting corral then you are out of the event. At this point, your key will be added to the Governor’s Pardon.
Event Rules
  • The course will be at least 4.167 miles long.
  • The starting corral will stay the same size throughout the event. When the bell rings at the start of the lap on the hour then you must be inside the starting corral. If you are not then you’ll receive a DNF and not be allowed to continue.
  • Each loop starts precisely 1 hour after the last, and warnings will be given at 3, 2, and 1 minute prior to the start of the exercise. All prisoners must start at the bell (no late starts.) Each exercise must be completed within an hour to be counted… including the final lap.
  • Except for restroom breaks, prisoners may not leave the course until each exercise is completed.
  • No non-prisoners on the course (including prisoners who have been eliminated.)
  • Prisoners are not permitted to receive assistance of any kind outside race HQ.
  • No artificial aids (including trekking poles.)
  • Slower runners must allow faster ones to pass.
  • If no prisoner can complete one more exercise than anyone else, there is no winner.
  • All participants must follow the guidance of prison wardens at all times.
  • If we believe the safety of prisoners is being compromised in any way, Hellfire Events Ltd reserve the right to stop you from competing in this event at any time.
  • All prisoners must be at least 18 years old on the race day.
  • Support crews and spectators are not permitted at this event. Participants who have dropped out are allowed to assist prisoners within race HQ only. Anyone found outside of the designated area will be asked to leave.
  • You must stick to the marked route at all times. Anyone found off-route will be removed from the event and asked to leave.
  • Dogs are not permitted at this event.
  • Littering of any kind will not be tolerated.
  • Abusive behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated.
  • If someone requires medical assistance, you must notify a prison warden immediately.
If you need to drop out for whatever reason, you MUST inform the Race Director.
If you do drop out, you will be allowed to assist other prisoners from inside Race HQ only.
Any runners unable to make it to the finish must inform a warden of their intention to withdraw and will then be taken back to Race HQ by a warden from the nearest safe point.
Spectator Info
Under no circumstances are spectators allowed within the prison walls. There are, however, points around the prison where spectators can see inside the revetment. Spectators do this entirely at their own risk.
