Directions by road:
Leave the M6 at Junction 36, follow the A590 and signs for Barrow-in-Furness. Approximately 18 miles after leaving the motorway you will reach the Newby Bridge roundabout. Take the first exit for Barrow and then the first right turn over a bridge and past the Swan Hotel. Lakeside is sign-posted three miles along this road on the right.
Directions by Rail:
South Lakeland is linked to all mainline services. The nearest station is at Grange-Over-Sands which is connected with the stations of Lancaster and Carnforth on the West Coast Line making it an easy destination from London, Scotland, or continental Europe. It is also possible to reach Lakeside from the east of Britain by taking the picturesque Leeds to Lancaster line that also connects at Carnforth. From Grange-Over-Sands station, road transport to Lakeside is required from Grange.
Event day logistics
A small bag (max 20 litres) can be left at the bag drop in Troutbeck for you to refresh food, drinks, socks, motivation. These will be marked with your race number and stored securely, though ultimately at your own risk. All bags must be ready to go by 5:30am Saturday 7th September at registration.
Start Time - will take place at 6am
Hot food & drinks will be available at the finish. We are also lucky enough to have England's Largest Bath* available for a post race cool down. Our finish line sits right on the shore of Lake Windermere and a dip (at your own risk, we're not going in after you!) would make a fitting end to what promises to be a fantastic day out. Camping is also available on the Saturday evening. We recommend you make the most of it before driving home, especially if you have far to go, driving tired is very dangerous.
Spectator Info
We know how important it can be to have supporters out on the course to cheer you on. There will be limited parking at the aid stations and we ask that your supporters find parking elsewhere to avoid any hold-ups. There are numerous locations along the route that would be great spots to spectate, especially any of the 5 summits that THE LAP passes over. Outside help, such as additional bottles, jelly babies or hugs are permitted but competitors must carry their own kit throughout and pacers are not permitted in the interests of fairness.
Kit List
THE LAP is a low-level route around Lake Windermere and as such is the bad weather option.
A kit check could be carried out at any time around the route at any of the aid stations or the finish. All items listed below must be present at all times to qualify for a result.
Waterproof Jacket
With a hood and taped seams.
Waterproof Trousers
With taped seams.
Warm layer
A long sleeve technical tee, fleece or lightweight synthetic/duvet jacket. We'll leave it to you to decide which is most appropriate for you but please consider how long you will be out and how quickly you will be moving, there are no prizes for who can get the coldest.
Hat/Buff & Gloves
We will accept a buff or similar as a hat. Gloves must be full finger.
Suitable Footwear
Trail shoes recommended.
Water Carrying Ability
At least 1l capacity in a bladder, bottle or flasks. There will be no cups available at any aid stations.
To include at least 500kcal (e.g. 2 CLIF bars) emergency ration remaining at the finish.
Emergency Foil Bag
Not a foil blanket.
Fully charged and proven to work and set of spare batteries or a spare torch.
And know how to use it. Click here if you're not sure.
Mobile Phone
Fully charged for emergencies with the race organiser's number saved. Not to be used for navigation as this will quickly kill battery. Use a separate device if using for navigation.
Cash, not just a card, we recommend £20. If you plan on stopping at one of the many pubs or cafe's en route, bring more.
Supplied with the route marked and the locations of the water/feed/aid stations. The map will be printed on waterproof paper.
THE LAP is fully waymarked but is an excellent opportunity to practice navigation and get used to properly using a compass. It is not unknown for signage to be removed from an event and having some basic navigational skills could just save the day. In most likelihood you will not need it but we'd rather you carried one all the same!
GPS Tracker
This is a small box, about the size of a matchbox, which we will attach to your rucksack/vest strap (the tracker needs to be able to detect a GPS signal). The trackers allow us, and your followers online, to see your progress around THE LAP. The tracker needs to be external to your pack to ensure a consistent signal. They are only to be attached or removed by race officials.
To carry it all. This must be on your person at all times, while running.
