The Monsal Trail Half Marathon takes in the stunning, traffic-free Monsal Trail - one of the most iconic of Peak District trails - with a flat-ish, good surface throughout. The Monsal Trail, is a former Midland railway line and the route will take you through four railway tunnels plus across the spectacular Monsal Viaduct. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, this half marathon is ideal for Spring marathon training.

Brought to you by the same team that manages the Tissington Trail Half Marathon - which regularly features in the Runner's World top 10 UK trail races - this race will be an out and back race from the former Bakewell Station.

The race has a strict entry limit and will sell out, so an early entry is recommended to secure your place. Suitable for experienced runners but also a great introduction to the half marathon distance for runners of all abilities.

The Monsal Trail Half Marathon & 10K routes

The race starts and finishes at Bakewell Station and heads along the Monsal Trail to a turnaround point at Miller’s Dale, before returning to Bakewell and the finish. The course is multi terrain, on a mixture of tarmac and hard track, and will take you through three long railway tunnels - note, your GPS device may not work!

The course will be traffic-free but will be used by other Trail users including walkers, dog walkers, horses and cyclists. We ask that all runners keep to the left hand side of the trail, to be aware of, and respect, other trail users and take extra care where the trail narrows.

Nice straight forward course, literally. Good one for a PB, but chaotic at the end with people milling around the finish but friendly atmosphere, well enjoyed, back next year

A lovely route to run! Can maintain a nice, constant pace and beautiful views, a lovely place for a half marathon. Didnt matter that the trail was open to the public.

A fantastic race in beautiful scenery. The tunnels were great fun. While there were little crowds, that's what I expected so it wasn't disappointing, and there were plenty of people on the trail out for a walk/ride so it didn't feel lonely at all. In terms of running, the course couldn't have been much better - flat the whole way, a simple path so no worrying about what was coming next, the surface was fine to run on. The small scale of the race meant there wasn't much of a race HQ but I was pleasantly surprised that there were still a couple of stalls there - big bobble hats and sports massage. There were plenty of loos as well which is always handy. The medal is brilliant - a cute little running bakewell tart! I really appreciate when the medal is a true memento of the race. The only room for improvement was the placement of the water stations, as the first one was quite early (at about the 2 mile mark although they said it would be 3m) and then that same one was our third station, but I felt there needed to be one sooner than mile 10-11 after the previous station at 6. But it being a half, it didn't really have much bearing anyway. Overall an absolutely brilliant race and one I really hope to return to! I'd make a suggestion to all future runners who have never been to or seen the Monsal Trail - if you get a chance before race day, take a visit up to Monsal Head to get a view from above of the trail, which really puts it into perspective when you're running it!

Great event and organisation again, did the half last year, was due to run it again this year, but had influenza for 4 weeks in Feb so decided to down grade and be sensible as I had done zero training. Everything was organised for me. I collected my number etc on the day! Great work Nice Work. All my emails re queries with down grading were answered straight away. The water stations were well stocked etc etc - wonderful event!
