The Wee Triathlon is a pool-based triathlon involving a 400m swim, 10-mile bike ride in Glen Nevis and a 3-mile cross country run.

This is a perfect and very doable triathlon aimed at beginners and those who are looking for something to keep them motivated and fit over the winter. The Wee Tri has only one ‘quick’ transition, between the bike and run, so is even more suited to those just starting out on multi-sport as you get a rest between your swim and cycle!

Our aim is to encourage everyone to experience the wonderful world of triathlon and make it fun and rewarding for all competitors. We have been running The Wee Triathlon for thirteen years, its a favorit with experienced triathletes and with participants trying a multi-sport event for the very first time.

Although the thought of it may be terrifying, a triathlon needn’t be! If this is your first triathlon. Then we think you will love this format to ease you into the world of multi sport events.

The Wee Triathlon route


The pool-based swim at Lochaber Leisure Centre, the pool is 25m long and participants are required to swim 16 lengths.  The way the swim works is that there will be 12  swimmers in the pool at any one time (that’s two per lane). You dib in at the start of the swim and dib at the end of your swim. (Dib is a term used for the timing chips which will record your times.) The swim runs starts from 0830 and lanes are allocated as they become available thus alleviating the race nerves, once you are finished your swim the clock is stopped until you start your cycle leg.


Set in Glen Nevis the route takes you up Glen Nevis following the main road, the road climbs slowly and gently at first, as you climb further into the Glen you will be treated to fantastic scenery, some short steep climbs and some amazing descents and swooping corners. When you reach the turning point at Achriabhach you will turn onto a  forestry road (the road has a reasonable surface suitable for mountain bike, hybrid or cyclocross bike) after an initial climb  you will descend  down the glen towards Braveheart  Car Park where you will turn left onto a graded footpath which will take you back to the transition area via the  local landmark the Saltire Rock. (Short sharp climb)


Remember that the transition from bike to run is timed, therefore have your stuff ready and in a place where you know to collect it. The run itself takes you back into Glen Nevis, you follow the road up the Glen to Braveheart Car park, where you will join the bike route and do a wee loop in the forest before heading back to transition via the Saltire rock for the second time.   Sounds easy? Its a three mile run on road and trail with a nice wee climb thrown in for good measure.

The swim runs start from 08:30
Cycle leg starts 10:00 onwards.
You will start your run immediately after you have racked your bike in transition.
