Course Details

The event will be a looped event with participants completing one loop for a half marathon, two loops for a full marathon and three loops for the ultra marathon (40 miles). There will also be a 10K event that will encompass part of the course.

The route that we have chosen will showcase the beauty of Tollymore to all participants and will further strengthen the Newcastle/Castlewellan area as a great playground for adventure sports enthusiasts.

The Tollymore Trail Marathon will be a fully waymarked event and will be based solely within the confines of Tollymore Forest Park. The route will follow a series of forest trails throughout the forest whilst all the time taking in the spectacular scenery of this location.

Raceday Logistics

All competitors MUST report to Tollymore Forest Park for registration, kit check, and race briefing. The safety briefings for all competitors will cover safety, the latest weather forecast, logistical considerations and other important information.

There will be hydration/feed stations at various locations; these will be approximately every 10K.

Kit List

Running shoes (trail runners recommended or ordinary runners if preferred); or walking boots
Hydration pack or water bottle
Energy snacks
Windproof top

Participants must be aware that weather conditions can change and deteriorate rapidly, and should bring appropriate clothing to keep them warm in any adverse weather. Your feet might get wet, so prepare for all eventualities.

Family and friends are more than welcome to come along to this event to show support. Supporters also add an atmosphere and additional energy to the experience for all the other participants and the crew. The best place for your supporters is at various crossing points within Tollymore Forest. From one vantage point, you will be in a position to view competitors two or three times without having to walk any more than 50 meters.

Please note: it's asked that spectators follow the recommendations of the organisers in order to prevent bottle necks and congestion.

How difficult is each event?

Without us knowing your level of fitness, the answer to this question is difficult but we would say that unless you have put in the training and have the miles in your legs, please do not enter a distance option that you know will be out of your league. We have multiple distance options – choose carefully!

Is there anything sent to me in the post before the event?

No, all information and items to include race numbers, timing chip and other information associated with the event will be given to you upon registration on the day of the event.

Can I raise money for charity?

Yes, we have no problem with participants raising money for charities and other worthwhile causes.

Do you have any rules that I have to adhere to?

The event is open to runners and walkers of 18 years of age and over. Participants must ensure they have appropriate footwear, clothing and have access to water and energy food whilst competing. All participants must refer to the recommended kit list. All participants must follow the prescribed course and adhere to the spirit of the event by showing courtesy to other trail users, dropping no litter – we operate a Leave No Trace Policy. If you drop your rubbish you WILL be disqualified. Leaving gates as found and offering fellow runners who are injured, exhausted or confused, help and support.

  • Did the 10K in 2018

Participated in the 26Extreme Tollymore Trail 10k event 3 times and on 3rd attempt managed to come 3rd. All events are very well organised with plenty of sign posting, adequate water stations and post-race refreshments. I'd recommend 26Extreme for anyone wanting to try a running or ultra event. Looking forward to attending again.
  • Did the Ultra Marathon in 2018

Second year running this Ultra... fantastic event...well organized and great atmosphere..!!
  • Did the Marathon in 2018

I thought the event was amazing, it wasn't my quickest marathon but it certainly felt like it with all the different terrain and scenery keeping your mind off of the pain in my legs. The only thing I would suggest is that trail trainers should be advised a little more strongly just because of the terrain.
