Route information
Itinerary:
Day 1 - London - Albert
Meet outside the Imperial War Museum, London, for registration and a tour of the museum's WWI galleries. Catch a coach to Albert, France - the location of the Battle of the Somme.
Day 2 - Albert - Arras
After breakfast in Albert, transfer to Bazentine where the trek will begin. Hike to the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, stopping on the way at several cemetaries and historic sites such as the Red Dragon Memorial in Death Valley, and the Lochnagar Crater, learning more about these sites on the way. From Thiepval, walk along the historical front of the Somme, stopping in Beaumont Hamel and Hawthorne Ridge amongst other sites before finishing Hébuterne and transferring to Arras by coach.
Day 3 - Arras - Ypres
Begin the day by transferring to the German Military Cemetery at Neuville St. Vaast, before following country lanes to the steep hill of the Mont St Eloi, by the river Scarpe. Take in the panorama of Vimy Ridge before finishing the morning by climbing to the Notre Dame de Lorette, the largest French military cemetary in the world. Lunch here, then visit the L'anneau de la mémoire before trekking to Vimy and the Canadian Memorial. After a long day of trekking, transfer to the Belgium city of Ypres.
Day 4 - Langemark - Ypres
After breakfast transfer to the Welsh National Memorial Park in Langemark, and then follow a route through farmland, stopping off at the Harry Patch Memorial on the way to lunch at the Memorial Museum Passchendaele. After lunch trek through the Polygon Woods, passing century old preserved bunkers, before arriving at the Buttes New British Cemetary and the Black Watch Corner Memorial. Finish the afternoon by hiking to Talbot House to visit the cemetary, museum, and amazingly preserved trenches. Tonight all participants will receive their finishers medal at a dinner in Ypres.
Day 5 - Ypres - London
Transfer back to London by coach.
