Route information
One of the most beautiful running routes in the UK, the national arboretum is the perfect location for sporting events, and runners taking part in this race will be able to take in the world renowned tree collection at one of its most beautiful times of year, with summer blooms and flowering trees providing the backdrop to this popular Half Marathon.
Perfect for those looking for a challenge in the new year, or veteran runners looking to achieve a new personal best, the course takes participants through the picturesque avenues of the Old Arboretum and into the peaceful tranquillity of the ancient Silk Wood, on largely flat terrain and hard paths.
All those taking part in the race will be able to make a big difference to their fitness and wellbeing, but also to the nation’s heritage and environment. Money raised from the Half Marathon goes back into supporting the nation’s woods and forests, and protecting these beautiful places for future generations.

The setting was great, but the course was less than 20k which was disappointing. Also starting late for the benefit of latecomers was not a great call.

The course was flat, beautiful and perfectly balanced between sun and shade, I managed a pb without even expecting to or particularly trying, the course just carried me around. Highly recommended this course to anyone looking for an easy trail run as most of it was on gravel paths. Lovely morning in a beautiful place!

The race came up short (12.5miles) rather than a full half marathon. Also the parking fee should be included in the ticket as it took a while to get in due to the exchange of cash needed.

It wasn’t the full half distance and I still haven’t been sent my result.

Very disappointed that the route was not 13.1 miles, was closer to 12 miles. Thankfully I was planning on a PB but I’d have been disappointed if I had been as the course fell short of the official distance.

I think people driving in too late creates delay for everyone. Registration was to close at a certain time, but it didn’t. A bag drop would have been good. All in all a great event and excellent location. Staff were very professional and communication was good.

Loved the course. Just a shame it was not 13.1 miles. I paid for a half marathon and did not get one.

Course was slightly short of the half marathon distance which was a little annoying. I was far from the last to finish and the give away protein bars had run out. Otherwise a great event in a lovely setting.

The setting was beautiful and happy to have ran Westonbirt. That being said, there were quite a few issues that made it overall less enjoyable. - The main issue was the course length, as this was short according to most runners watches. While I appreciate GPS is not 100% reliable in wooded areas, there were no distance markers around the course to confirm distance. The course was also not available in advance. When a race of this scale is advertised, there should be confidence that the distance is correct and diligence has been placed on getting this right (e.g. with course certification). It was overheard from a marshal that the course was changed during the time of the race due to an issue with distance - if this was the case, it should be communicated to runners. The course was consistently advertised as flat, which was not the case with two large up and down hills. This is fine, but the information needs to be correct for proper preparation. - There was no water at the final water station. I had completed the majority of the run and it was a hot morning - this is a safety issue!- Parking was disorganised, especially with cars queuing onto the main road. This was charged at £5 per car, when Westonbirt is usually free to park. I think this is quite steep when the entrance to the race is not cheap in itself.- The race started late by around 15 minutes (due to disorganised parking). We had timed our warmup for the correct 8am start and this was thrown by the late start time.- The free pre- and post-race massage couldn’t be found.- Information provided before the event was very sparse and what was provided was done so very close to the race day. I already have tonnes of race information for races in September, that I either received a matter of days before this race or not at all.- There were not enough energy bars for all finishers. These should be stocked to ensure every runner gets the same upon finishing. We all paid the same entry free (which doesn’t include a tshirt etc) - energy bars or beer should not be ‘first-come-first-served’.We did like our race photograph, but it would have been nice to have a photo across the finish line. It was advertised that there would be ‘finishers photos’ so better communication about what this meant would have been nice. The photographer seemed to be moving around a lot and so it’s unsurprising that we only have one photo from the event.Otherwise, registration was easy and queues weren’t too bad for the provided toilets. It’s a shame that there were lots of issues as it was a lovely location, but I won’t be rushing to do a Tough Runner organised event again (we’ve had similar issues with other events organised by them in the past).
