Windy Hill Fell Race 2020 - Running in Littleborough

Windy Hill Fell Race is a fast run on well visible paths, rolling hills and has one almighty memorable climb. All this takes place on the Pennine moors, where the views of Hollingworth Lake and landmarks further afield are stunning. 9 miles, 1281 ft of climbing.

Taking place on the surrounding hills of Hollingworth Lake, The fell runner’s favourite, Windy Hill Fell Race consists of fast trails, runnable fells and one all-mighty, memorable climb. Beginning at Littleborough RUFC, the course immediately opens up into a fast-paced, undulating run before being met with the memorable climb, which shares its namesake with the race, Windy Hill. Once you make your way to the top, you are graced with what can only be described as ‘Highland rock’ with stunning scenery. Now the fun part… A steady, fast-paced 4-5 mile downhill on a rollercoaster-esque trail leading back to the finish.

Excellent event as usual, great course a proper fell race. A few people didn't respect the kit rules which I can't understand because it is for your own safety.

One of the best and toughest fell runs I've done great event. Registration could have been organised a bit better. I would highly recommend this event.Barrie Wain

Loved this race. My first proper fell race. Full fra kit is required inc taped seams compass etc. The course was marshalled and marked thankfully but you are required to have a map of the course which they sold for 2. Good value for money. Friendly event

My first fell race & a perfect first one to start with. Its a fantastically organised well event & the course is well marked with marshals around the course so you dont feel to isolated. The course has two uphills for the first 4 miles then flat over the tops then a 3 mile descent. It was a hard race but not to overly challenging at just under 9 miles, a fantastic event that I will definitely be doing again.

A (running) friend called me on Friday to tell me her friend had pulled out of this race and would I like a free place. I had only done one fell race previously which was Hell on the Fell which is leg 2 of the Tour of Tameside. I cannot fault the organisation of the event and the friendliness of the organising team. Upon arrival we registered and went through kit check (note to self, anybrace which requires you to carry full waterproofs, whistle and map, is going to be tough). My friend did not have a suitable jacket so one of the organisers let her his. When registering there were free energy gels and the opportunity to purchase any of the kit you were missing. Hollingworth Lake is a lovely part of the world (except for the days when it is blowing a gale and the rain is coming down sideways) the scenery once you were up on the tops was amazing. I found the course difficult as in some places it was very narrow which meant if you were behind a slower runner you could not get past. In places it was very treacherous which led to me having a fall at around 3 miles, this then made me much more cautious (and slower) for the remainder of the race. I was wearing Hoka trail shoes but struggled to get a strong foothold in areas. I would recommend trail shoes despite my difficulties as xc spikes would be counter productive on the hard ground of the course. This is a very good event, a special mention goes to the marshalls who must have been cold and soaked to the skin but still stood shouting encouragement (I could just hear it over the howling gale force winds), the cup of tea at the finish also gets an honourable mention. My only gripe is that I am part magpie and love a medal but there was not one for this race, that said its a small gripe and a medal would only push the entry cost up. Good race, good value, well organised by a friendly team. Ill do this race again but next time Ill bring a Nepalese sherpa along for a bit of moral support. 

Great race and I would recommend it for anyone new to fell running as its well marked and marshalled and on clear tracks.

It didn't matter to me personally but I don't think the showers worked which could have been a problem for people with a long drive
