  • Did the event in 2018

This is not so much a race, more of an enjoyable weekend ride so not really one for the uber competetive but really accessible for others just looking for a good day out on the bike.No race briefing to speak of, you just take a map and start when you are ready to (rolling start between 8&9) which make total sense as means the field is spread out.The roads are open so you do need to take care but the ride was really well marshalled and pretty much every turn well marked with junctions supervised and someone there to wave you through (I got lost once but totally my fault).Very friendly crowd and as I was alone I partnered up with someone a couple of miles in and we rode together which certainly helped in the later stages.Feed stations are not a speed through affair but more a stop for a coffee and a chat (as I say really not a race). The whole event is for charity and well worth doing; def going to be on my list for 2019 as a great warm up for the legs before tri season starts.

St George’s Sportive
Princes Risborough, South East, United Kingdom

First run in 2007, the Princes Risborough St. Georges Sportive is a cracking early season ride!

Make no mistake, this is challenging course. Check out the route stats and the figures may not look too daunting to the seasoned eye, but dont be fooled. Take another look at that buzzsaw profile. Those climbs just keep on coming! Theres no single route defining monster climb here (although a couple of detours off the ridge will stretch you on the way back up), however, the Chilterns dont lie down flat for long, so youll be climbing and dropping like youre on a mini mountain stage!

Its a stunning area of the countryside though, so the surroundings will help take your mind off the gradients. The Chilterns in Spring a great place to be out on a bike!

The shorter routes will follow much of the same course, so the hilly nature applies to these too, however they will cut out the second descent and climb back up to the main ridge, which will save you some energy. The 80k option works out as a great day ride and a superb introduction to cyclosportive riding!

  • Did the event in 2018

I did the 10 k run option this year, after doing the aquathlon last year (can't swim at the moment due to wound on leg).  This is a multi-sport event with races starting off at different times, the 5 and 10 k runs were at 1000 am.Registration was easy, you can collect your number the day before (did this as local to me).  However, the timing chip wasn't available until the next day, but there was no queue to collect this.  There's no official baggage storage (most people leave these in their cars or in transition), but if you've come by tube/bike for the run you can leave it under the stairs by registration. The race starts by the lake, with the 5 k (one lap) and 10 k  (two) legs going together.  There were only 26 in the 10 k, so it's not too crowded.  The run initially goes around the lake, and then loops around the Merchant Taylors school sports field.  It's funny going past the pavillion whilst the criket teams are warming up, last year it was Middlesex and Sussex 2nd XIs there.  The grass surface is good for running and there are some nice long straights.  However, quite a bit is unshaded, so it can be a bit hot on the run.  You then head off for a second loop, and there is a water station as you start this.  There's only really support at the start/end/transition area, but the marshals around the course are all very good.  The DJ is enthusiastic as well. The medal is decent enough for a budget event, and a bottle of water is handed to you at the end.  There's a nice atmopshere and feel about the event, there's still a lot going on as people are coming in from the bike and tri events (having runners doing the 70.3 tri overtaking you at speed is quite humbling).  As there are permanent changing facilities, there's quite a few toilets available and the upstairs cafe/bar is lovely.  There's a reasonable amount of parking available, and not too far from the tube station at Moor Park.  All in all, it's a nice small multi-sport event, would probably do again as it's local, but may tri the aquathlon or swim next time.

  • Did the RideLondon Surrey 100 in 2018

Fantastic event, well signed and great feed stations. Atmosphere wasn't great but the weather didn't help!
  • Did the event in 2018

I got a place through the ballot. As a non cyclist I trained and prepared for the distance. What I had prepared for was the bad weather.,the organisation was second to none and it worked seamlessly, even sending last minute emails about cycling in the bad rain and how to handle the change in weather conditions. The aid stations were very well stocked and spaced apart. The Marshalls did a great job on the route however many cyclists forgot it was a sportive and put the Marshalls and others lives in danger. There were some serious incidents and cyclists were more concerned about going up leith hill or box hill than the safety of themselves and others or the dignity of the rider receiving CPR at the roadside. Marshalls would try and slow people down on the very sharp descents to no avail. These riders should be pulled from the sportive . Perhaps a flag system similar to motor racing should be used . Equally when we were held at leatherhead due to a Marshall being hit by a cyclist , many were just concerned about getting through. As a runner the mentality of this cyclists was quick shocking and made my experience of what should have been a great achievement rather negative. Green park was great finish location and it was easy to travel home with the bikes afterwards, everyone was very helpful. The medal was amazing and I love it but a t shirt would have been great too as it is truly an achievement to complete 100 miles

  • Did the event in 2017

I decided that I needed a 100 miler to complete for 2017 so I stumbled upon this event and decided the 117 mile route was for me.Starting at the velo park within the Olympic stadium, its easy to get to if you stay locally in a hotel but I am not sure about parking there and if that’s an option or not.You are given an allotted start time but have the option to drop back to ride with friends which is what I did. You roll up to the start, listen to the briefing then you are on your wayIt takes a good 20 miles to get out of London properly and I was not a fan of riding on these roads, even at 08:00am traffic was heavy and impatient, even with us sticking to the bike lanes! The feed stations however were amazing, each of them was well stocked with SIS gels and bars, crisps, oranges, jaffa cakes and other sweet treats. But the best thing was the cold mini jacket potatoes which were just amazing and made a change from all the sweet stuff. The route its self was not too taxing, no real big climbs but a lot of long slow roads where you struggled to get up to much speed. The views along the way weren’t as good as hoped, some nice villages but nothing to blow you awayRiding back into London was even worse than riding out, and this was on a Sunday afternoon, not something I wish to experience again in a hurry! There was cheese and wine at the end, but unfortunately having taken a tumble with 2 miles to go, I didn’t get to sample as I was being patched up! But I did enjoy the Erdinger alcohol-free beer which always goes down well. A lovely medal at the end as well.I enjoyed part of the ride but I am not sure I’ll be back again

What you need to know about Road Cycling Events

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.
