As this was my very first race I've every done, the atmosphere was really good and there was lots going on too. Everyone helped each other by cheering you especially the volunteers who helped run the series. Very well done can't wait til next year. The medal and t-shirt were a awesome addition.

I enjoyed this event, I know many people dont like laps as it can be boring, but it has its advantages as you nearly always have company, And easier to pace yourself, the only complaint the car park at 5 pound is a bit much, I managed to pay at reception, but was frustrated at the car park as a debit card was wanted to park as a runner I dont take my cards with me.

Great organisation! Yes the course is a little dull BUT there were toilets every mile, a well stocked feed station with water, electrolytes and food every lap and the course was flat. Perfect for me as a first timer

A beautiful 4 mile course in the beautiful Rushcliffe country park. We set off after a short pre-run briefing consisting of “it’s pretty hot so if you feel like you’re going to collapse, stop running just before you do” – wise words! Thankfully there was quite a lot of shade as the course took us through trails and wooded sections as well as a few more exposed areas of fields and hills. It was a lovely undulating route with varied terrain and I felt very thankful to have forced myself out for an evening’s running in such beautiful surroundings, rather than being sat on the sofa watching TV moaning about how hot it is (typically British). This was the first of a series of four races, you can read my full review on my blog!

  • Did the event in 2018

Getting up at four in the morning is not my idea of fun at the best of times, but getting up this early for a race well…I had heard lots about the Sunrise 5k, so was willing to give it ago! Along with hundreds of other people! As it was early in the morning it was easy to find a parking spot along the streets of Nottingham. We were all grouped together and as soon as you noticed the people ahead of you were off, no race briefing? Unless you were lucky enough to be at the front. Now I am not one of the faster runners, hardly! I was more or less at the back!! There weren’t many marshals around but when it came to crossing some of the main roads in Nottingham we were herded across traffic lights with people stopping the minimal early morning traffic into Nottingham. From those closer to the front they faced bottle necks as everyone tried to get around the corner at once! Though this route was unique because of the earliness of it, I am pretty sure the Nottingham 10k’s follow much of the same route.Though there was plenty of signage, parkrun felt better marshalled! As I came towards the end of the race and it was just a case of following those in front of you. Had all the marshalls given up or were they poorly staffed? From a businesses I expected more! The registration for the process was pretty easy, with the option of picking your t-shirt up the day before. But again if anyone had an issue during the race of collapsed how would they know who I was with no number assigned to me. Yes we all filled in the registration process but think lone person at the back no marshals around? Like I said Parkrun is better marshalled!Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed the experience and will most certainly sign up next year, I just worry more about what could have gone wrong!
  • Did the event in 2018

I had ran the Derby in 2017 and was looking forward to running the Nottingham version this year. Great value for money and my son was able to run it with me this year which he loved as he normally isn't old enough. Collecting the t-shirts the day before made it easier on the morning. I wasn't on the initial entrants list, however an e-mail to the office and they confirmed my entry straight away. On the morning we arrived and it was already busy. I felt that there were too many people in the area where we were gathered. This was the same through the course and there were lots of bottle necks at various points. The marshalls all the way round were great and very encouraging, even taking some unwanted hassle from people who were held up. I would definitely do another sunrise run again  but would do the Derby again instead of Nottingham just because it is less busy.
  • Did the event in 2017

This was the second year that I did this 5:30 run and there are a lot of improvements this year, especially in regards to the t-shirt and medal (which is awesome). The medal is really unique and provided by virtual running. I really like that you can rotate the sun to represent sunrise and sunset. It’s not a feature you really ever see on a race medal.I really enjoyed the fresh fruit provided at the end. It was all of high quality and a nice way to finish an early morning run.The marshals were really energetic (especially for that time in the morning) and really friendly. There were plenty placed over the course and stationed in key positions on the course. I did expect some sort of warm-up at the beginning especially considering the time of morning to ensure everybody was awake and ready for the run. It also would have bene helpful to have an area for those who were planning on walking the route behind the runners. There was a large group of walkers near the front of the start area who walked in a fairly straight line right at the beginning, it was difficult to get around them and a lot of runners were having to dodge each other as they tried to get around them. There were also some fairly narrow paths/turns fairly early on. The worst pile up was as we turned to get onto the canal path by the pub. There were quite a few near misses as you come around the corner fairly wide only to be faced with running into a bush or another runner. I’m not quite sure how that could be avoided, maybe taking the route a bit more into the car park. With so many runners it could be a bit of a hazard. Perhaps some signs for next year stating narrow turn etc, would be helpful. Overall a really friendly and well organised event. I cannot praise the marshals enough, I can’t imagine what time they had to be up this morning but they were very cheery and supportive.Events like this really bring out the best in people and it is a great way to explore the city with minimal traffic. The comradery amongst the runners was brilliant. It isn’t easy getting up and running at 5:30 in the morning, especially up those last two hills. The runners were all encouraging each other to make it up that last little bit before the home stretch. I highly recommend this event to all. It is a lot of fun, and such a nice way to explore the city (especially canal area) safely in the morning.

Running the city at 5.30am seemed like a good idea. When the alarm went off at 4am, not so much! This was the last event in the 2018 series and proved to be really enjoyable.  About 300 people gathered for the 5.30am start for the 5k route around Derby.  Nothing special about the route, but lots of people in high spirits and lots of smiling faces. No real local support (not surpriing at 5.30am!) but lots of friendly marshalls, who semed keen to make the experience worthwhile. Wearing of the event T Shirt was compulsory as there are no event numbers, good job it was a nice one! Lovely medal at the end and a bottle of water. All in all a recomended event and a pretty unique one.  Don't think I could handle a 4am get up too regularly though!

  • Did the event in 2018

This was my 2nd ever 10k , I chose this race as it was local. It was 200m + 2 laps of rothervally country park lakes. Nice flat course on gravel paths perfect for a PB. The only downside I found was you pass the finish area to do the extra lap. Also the country park was still open to public so had to be aware of other people walking/cycling and slow moving cars. Heard other competitors talking about queues for race numbers but I didn't have a problem as got there early as the race info recommend. A enjoyable 10k but slightly boring due to the laps. Cheap looking rubber medal compared to most other race medals. Good for a 1 off race, I don't think I'll do a race around Rothervally again, just use it for training.
  • Did the event in 2018

I completed the Neurocare Head Start 10k and enjoyed running to raise money for a good cause! The race was around Rother Valley Country Park, which is pretty flat, so a good course to get a PB on. The route was enjoyable, it was a double lap of the lake and then an extra lap of the smaller lake. The extra lap of the smaller lake was a little unpopular with runners as you had to run past the finish area to do the extra lap. Lovely support and friendly Marshall’s. Small but nice event village. My only complaint would be the long queue to college race numbers at the beginning. However, this is a charity race and was very well organised and was very much a lovely race ☺️ got a nice silicone medal at the end too.

Roche Abbey Trail Running Festival

Roche Abbey is definitely a hidden gem, its not very well known, and nevertheless its very beautiful. Roche Abbey is nestled away in South Yorkshire near the picturesque village of Maltby. The races will start and finish within the grounds of the glorious Roche Abbey and will encompass trail and track running through Lord Scarboroughs land, which originally formed part of Sherwood Forest.

Roche Abbey was founded in the 12th century by Cistercian monks; it was once home to 50 monks and 20 lay brothers. It is beautifully set in a valley landscaped by Capability Brown. The ruins of Roche Abbey are now the centre piece of the beautifully designed landscape.

Apparently Roche Abbey is a paranormal hotspot with lots of scary activity. The Abbey house which is only 240 years old, which now houses the Abbey shop as many tales surrounding it. One tale is of a Lady in Grey who can be seen looking out of the upstairs window where the sound of a wailing child can also be heard. Towards the end of the Abbey there lies a small stone coffin and it is said if one stares at it long enough, a face will appear.. Yikes!

So come running with us for miles with smiles and enjoy the hidden away treasures in this lesser known part of the world.

The heat made it a very challenging course.. a bit grim in fact! But course was stunning and the whole atmosphere at race HQ was fantastic. We made a day of it.

On a drunken evening some months ago me and my mate decided it would be a good idea to register for the 20 mile option of this event.  On waking the the next morning we both text each other demanding to know who had hacked our respective phones and done such a thing.Being only our second organised event both me and my mate (Gimli, son of Gloin) were slightly nervous on race day as you never quite know what to expect from the day. I was so nervous that i would get the registration bit wrong that i forgot we were meant to be doing 20 miles. Not quite sure what i was expecting to get wrong mind.Anyway, we need'nt have worried , registration was simple and really friendly, Diane showed us what we needed to do and get.We got chatting to various other runners and Andy the massage man so we were soon feeling very much at home and I even pretented i was a seasoned running veteran to a few folks. They could could blatantly tell i wasnt. The race course was stunning, great trails and spectacular views and plenty of hills.I can't thank the marshalls enough for a superb job of watering, feeding and generally getting us round the course on a ridiculously hot day. Massive thanks to you all, you were brilliant. The finish line was a sight to behold and we were welcomed in like champions. I actually thought i had won the whole event. Alas, i hadnt. The medals and goody bags were a triumph and although i didnt have any cake (I am watching my figure darling), it looked amazing. All in all, we had an incredible day, and so did the hundreds (well 10) of our friends and family who came to support.IGUN is most certainly not grim. Its a lovley warm friendly family of organisers and runners and we will certainly be booking more dates in the diary.

The Tissington Trail Half Marathon Sunday

The Tissington Trail Half Marathon has established itself as a real favourite with runners, often selling out months in advance, and we hold this race on two dates across one weekend to accommodate as many runners as possible. We're proud that the race regularly features in the Runner's World top 10 UK trail races.

The Tissington Trail, the site of a former railway line from Ashbourne to Buxton, runs along a 13 mile route from Parsley Hay to Ashbourne in Derbyshire. Surrounded by beautiful countryside the traffic-free trail is ideal for a cracking half marathon and, because the route is slightly downhill all the way, you've got gravity on your side!

This race features chip timing, a quality bespoke medal for all finishers, plus well-stocked aid stations and finish line goodies! Commemorative finisher's technical t-shirts will also be available to purchase.

Prizes from the event are generously sponsored by Big Bobble Hats who will be present on the day of the event.

We are also pleased to welcome Much Better Adventures on board as one of our event partners, an award-winning platform for booking unique, ready-made adventure weekends with amazing local hosts. Join a small social group of like-minded people, or book privately just for you and friends. From Kayaking and Wildcamping the Norwegian Fjords to climbing Mt Toubkal in Morocco, check out the amazing adventures you could have on your next weekend away.

wow, what can i say? Superb organisation from start to finish, a coach trip from the finish to the start of this point to point race was seamless, we were met by the blustery wind as many of the club runners warmed up, portaloos a plenty, quick briefing and we were off on the klaxon.Following the tissington Trail which if you do not know, is a disused railway through the Peak District, rolling hills, dry stone walls made this course interesting and stunning, the weather held off and it soon warmed up.There were plenty of fuel stations, water, Jaffa cakes and jelly babies, were on offer, the surface was made up of compact gravel, so no need for trail shoes. The organisers do not have rights to the path, it is not a closed event, all the cyclists and walkers I passed were very encouraging, offered support. The final 400meters throws a curve ball, like every good story, I will not spoil the ending!Great quality medal, no goody bag, that did not reflect badly, certainty value for money.

Great event with a mix of races and distances including Canicross. I did the 10k and enjoyed the course, which has just enough to keep it interesting with some small climbs, bit of off road terrain and a nice long downhill into the finish. Great unique medal. Car parking was well organised. only minor criticism would be the toilet provision, but this isn't something ubiquitous to this event.
  • Did the event in 2018

Such a good course... the Thoresby team are always so organised, which makes it a joy to take part in. The course itself is an added bonus. The race village is good too and free sports massage always good ! The organisation of this event is second to none.
  • Did the event in 2018

Third time doing this event and as with all SBR events really well organised. Registration is seamless, easy to get number, pins etc. On to the start line and although there was a bit of muddling about when it came to establishing starting paces, and hearing the tannoy it was pretty straightforward.

The course is really nice, plenty of scenery and hills! Thought the course was well marked out and they addressed that double loop issue (although i did read somebody still managed to do it twice). Plenty of water stations, enthusiastic volunteers and medical people.

Bit of a traipse from the finish post round to collecting medals and post run bags but I suppose that is a cool down period. Medals are amazing, they never do bad medals.

Overall another really well run event by SBR with minimal criticism. Some of the bigger companies/events can learn a lot from the way these guys organise there events.

The event takes place in the picturesque setting of Rother Valley. Im a great advocate of running near to water so four and a half flat laps of the two lakes made it pretty easy going. A personal best time for me!Having registered in advance I was able to arrive, park the car, get a coffee and set of to the start line all in good time.

  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

Flat half marathon on a good surface in nice surroundings. Laps were long enough that it wasn't boring, broke down the distance nicely. Paths were wide so having runners on different laps didn't cause any issue, although was open to public so be aware that some care may be needed to pass safely sometimes. Thanks to the organisers and marshals who were spread through the course and were very encouraging and friendly. Live online timing system was good for spectators to be able to tell what was going on.Seemed to be some runners unsure of where to go for registration and start, so signage could possibly be improved.

5am start in Victoria Park, Leicester, this was an out-and-back into Leicester City Centre.£15 seems a lots for a 5k race, especially as there was no chip timiing, no feed stations needed, and the tech t-shirt needed picking up. Theyalso ran out of some sizes.Probably would give it a miss next year.

I certainly  did!  I never appreciated quite how much rubbish got discarded on Leicester streets, how may slept rough in doorways or how late (or early) partygoers stayed out having been high fives by a merry group of men outside McDonalds. Having said that I thoroughly enjoyed the run, probably helped by it being a glorious morning. Everyone taking part seemed in good spirits despite the start time.  Race tshirt and finishers medal are great quality.

I had wanted to run this event but I'd booked Nottingham 10k which then moved it's date and organisers offered refunds for those not being able to make the date. Woohoo! I took back the refund and booked the White Peak Trail 16 mile event. I was so pleased at this because the N10k also changed it's route and it no longer went through the city, not what you'd expect! WPT was set in the white peaks of the Peak District, an amazing part of the country, with the route utilising parts of Tissington Trail, Dovedale and many fields connecting the 2.If you want an event with views, flat tracks, steep inclines and some technical descents this is your race. Pre-race was straight forward, arrived well enough in advance and was thorough. The provided maps were useful if you wanted to self-navigate but wasn't essential as the course was very well marked.Registration was also a simple affair, picking numbers up from inside Ashbourne Leisure Centre, no faff or fuss. The start line acted as the briefing area and the finish line. From here we were set off in waves of 10 minutes in packs of around 20 runners. AWESOME! Small informal groups to spread out the total pack. This had clearly been thought out as Tissington Trail can get narrow in places. The post-race accolade was non-existent! I understand that this is a young company that's watching costs, but to be handed a sheet of scrappy paper back at registration that was only fit for the recycling was a little bit gutting. Especially as the info was printed on the wrong side and ineligible. A bit of paper doesn't cut it and let's the event down a tad!Overall, I can recommend this event. It was well delivered in a great location and without the over-hyped fluff you get with some races. Just needs an accolade be it T or medal.

Chosen by our team, these are some of our favourite events for first-timers. 5k races & 10k races are perfect for beginners, they tend to be relatively flat (always check the elevation just in case) and there’ll usually be a great crowd to cheer you on.

Find the right running event for you

To keep motivated try to run with friends and to organise a race a few months away as something to work towards. Running as a sport is very inclusive, people love to chat and give a boost to those around them! Practice makes perfect so with the right training you can achieve anything. Start small and it won’t be long before you’re a total professional tackling the bigger races.
