Reading Triathlon

The very first triathlon event to take place in the UK was held at the Kirtons Farm Water Sports Centre back in 1983. The venue has now become the Tri2O Swim Centre, based adjacent to the Reading Lake Hotel.

The Reading Triathlon has been run and organised by the experienced events team at My Sporting Times (who also run the Tri2O Swim Centre) since its inception many years ago. Due to diversification of their business, and their close links with the Tri2O Triathlon Club (which was founded at the Swim Centre by a small group of keen triathletes), MST handed over the organisation of the event to the club. We have continued to work closely in partnership with the MST Team to ensure continuity, benefit from their expertise and experience, whilst also bringing fresh ideas to make the event the best local triathlon ever.

What you need to know about Beginner Friendly Triathlons

If you’re just starting out, the best thing to do would be to book a Super Sprint or Sprint distance triathlon as these are the shortest two. There are lots of different ranges of abilities in triathlon so there’ll always be people actually ‘sprinting’ the Sprint distance but generally Sprints and Super Sprints are the best to get a feel for the sport. You can see the specific distances here.

Different Triathlon event types

Triathlons are an all day affair, so get a group together and go to the pub for lunch afterwards. Our experience is that most events happen in cool areas such as Dorney Lake in Windsor, so it’s a great excuse to escape the city for the day. They draw good crowds, and you’ll always have people cheering you on. Super Sprints tend to be very quick, so depending on your fitness level, you might want to choose a Sprint distance so you have enough time to enjoy each stage of the race. On average, Sprint triathlons will be over and done within 1.45–2 hours so it’ll go by in a flash.

Find the right triathlon for you

It’s important to have the right kit, you need a wetsuit that allows you to move and a good bike. We’ve collected a few of our favourite tris for beginners below, they’re great fun and certainly won’t disappoint. Best of luck from all of us here at LDT.
