What you need to know about Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is riding bicycles off-road (as opposed to Road Cycling events) and often over rough terrain, using specially designed bikes with features designed to enhance durability and performance. Mountain biking can generally be broken down into multiple categories: cross country, trail riding, all mountain (also referred to as “Enduro”), downhill, freeride and dirt jumping. However, the majority of mountain biking falls into the categories of Trail and Cross Country riding styles.

Find the right Mountain biking event for you

Mountain bikers ride off-road trails such as singletrack, back-country roads, fire roads, and often venture to ski resorts that stay open in the summer for such activities. Because riders are often far from civilisation, there’s a strong ethic of self-reliance in the sport. Riders learn to repair broken bikes and flat tires to avoid getting stranded. Many riders carry a backpack, including water, food, tools for trailside repairs and a first aid kit in case of injury. Group rides are common, especially on longer treks. Map navigation skills will come in handy.

Here at Let’s Do This we want to help you find exactly the right event. By working with some of the most renowned Mountain Bike Race organisations in the space, we’ve got a great selection of epic challenges below.

Ride 100k on the Ridgeway in a day!

The Ridgeway is Europes oldest continually used highway. Dating back thousands of years, this was a prehistorically important route, with many ancient landmarks along its length, and ending at the magnificent stone circles of Avebury (which predates Stonehenge by some 700 years!)

Today, the Ridgeway remains a popular recreational route, and a fantastic long distance MTB trail! Faster paced and less extreme than the South Downs Way, the Ridgeway never the less gives you plenty to get your teeth into. The route keeps you high up and offers continuous sweeping views, with just enough dips and diversions along the ridge to keep your climbing / descending muscles ticking over! The surface only occasionally gets semi-technical, leaving you with 100km of very rideable trail to enjoy! Its a ride that invites you to open up your engines, and test how long you can keep them running!

And we make sure that all you have to think about is riding. The Trail Break Team have over 20 years experience running long distance MTB challenges, and detailed knowledge of the Ridgeway itself. The Ridgeway 100 Century to the Stones is fully supported, from route marking to multiple feed and support stops, so all you have to do is concentrate on taking on this epic ride!

Welcome to the No Fuss Ultimate MTB challenge for endurance athletes and people with a sense of adventure. Now a mainstay of the No Fuss calendar the Tour de Ben Nevis in 2018 stays true to its word of bringing mountain biking back to the mountains. A 72km circumnavigation of Ben Nevis from Fort William, the Outdoor Capital of the UK. This is one of the countrys longest point-to-point events; an MTB endurance, enduro and mountain marathon event all rolled into one.

We must stress this is more of an event than a race. Those that are super fit and want to race hard will not be disappointed and the 4 special timed sections will spice it up a bit and really bring out the competitors from within however those who see this as a major personal challenge will be able to pace themselves and enjoy the adventure and wilderness of this remote area.

The course will not be littered with signage and support people, it will be left as untouched as possible to allow you to enjoy this environment in its natural state. With this comes some personal responsibility, which is a big part of the event ethos. We are taking the bubblewrapping away and letting you take on this event knowing that you will need motivation and tenacity to get to the finish line.

2018 will be the eigth year that we have run this event, those who rode in 2016 will remember the weather. In 2016 we were unable to safely manage the river crossing a Luibelt and the race format was changed to an out and back, we are delighted that in 2017 the route was managable in its entirity, although for many the river crossing was memorable.
