What you need to know about Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is riding bicycles off-road (as opposed to Road Cycling events) and often over rough terrain, using specially designed bikes with features designed to enhance durability and performance. Mountain biking can generally be broken down into multiple categories: cross country, trail riding, all mountain (also referred to as “Enduro”), downhill, freeride and dirt jumping. However, the majority of mountain biking falls into the categories of Trail and Cross Country riding styles.

Find the right Mountain biking event for you

Mountain bikers ride off-road trails such as singletrack, back-country roads, fire roads, and often venture to ski resorts that stay open in the summer for such activities. Because riders are often far from civilisation, there’s a strong ethic of self-reliance in the sport. Riders learn to repair broken bikes and flat tires to avoid getting stranded. Many riders carry a backpack, including water, food, tools for trailside repairs and a first aid kit in case of injury. Group rides are common, especially on longer treks. Map navigation skills will come in handy.

Here at Let’s Do This we want to help you find exactly the right event. By working with some of the most renowned Mountain Bike Race organisations in the space, we’ve got a great selection of epic challenges below.

The Wiggle South Downs Epic stands out as one of our best mountain bike events in the calendar. At 40 miles, the Epic route of this ride is the longest, and its 3,218ft of elevation gain also makes for the most amount of climbing with Standard and Short courses also ranking as relatively tough.

Dont let this dissuade you though as the climbs give irresistible dropping descents in return, and the incredible views and scenic Sussex sights across the South Downs National Park are tricky to top.

Youll enjoy stunning views over the south coast from the top of Kingley Vale and St Roches Hill while out on the course and the rolling finish on the last few miles of bridleways and paths along the South Downs Way make this a must for any keen off-road rider.

the Ride with No Name may be the biggest 30km ride youll take on this year! The ultimate Friday evening ride, starting and finishing at one of Hampshires finest pub, it features a massive 1,000m of climbing and descending in a relentless but little known pocket of hills called the Hangers. Lets put that in perspective for a moment. 1,000m of climbing in 30km is 50% more climb per km than the South Downs Way (which sits a few miles to the south).

This is a short ride with a big punch! The ancient, wooded hills of the Hangers feature a host of great riding, from insanely steep climbs to barrelling single track descents, gnarly little drop-ins and perilous rain-rut runs. All in one of the most beautiful hidden corners of the countryside that youve (probably) never heard of! As if that wasnt enough, the ride is based from (and named for) the local legend that is The Pub with No Name, one of the very best country pubs youll find. A charming 17th Century hostelry, it serves a wide selection of excellent beers, and delicious home cooked food. The perfect place to finish your ride and enjoy a pint and bite to eat! And if you want more than the one pint, theres camping on site too, in the pubs very own camping field! Stay on for the evening, climb into your tent and leave at your leisure on Saturday morning!

2018 will mark our 10th visit to the area, and the quality of the route is reflected in the time spent perfecting it. Anyone familiar with the area will know it can be undulating and we're not shying away from its natural gradients.

Long sections amongst the valleys provide some absolutely stunning views which are nicely complemented by some exhilarating woodland single track. There will, of course, be a few 'ups' along the way but the quality of trails and natural landscape make it all worthwhile.
