What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

A very popular event with a scenic course. Despite somewhat challenging route 2017 saw a high success rate 89 finished out of 91. This maybe due to the quality home baking at refreshment stops.

The Bealach is the UKs biggest road climb with an ascent of 626m from sea level in just 10km. It is set in a fabulous unspoilt landscape with outstanding views of the sea and hills. The Applecross Peninsula is renowned as a gem in Scotlands crown of natural wonders. The idea of a sportive belongs to local cycling legend Clifford Davidson.

The event was first run in the summer of 2006 and it was immediately obvious that it had captured the imagination of cyclists of all standards. Shortly after, due to demand, we introduced a 2nd shorter option which also included the opportunity to climb the big one! The Bealach Mor retains the original route of 144km and the Bealach Beag introduced a shorter distance of 72kms.

The Wiggle County Durham Dynamo, now in it's second year, explores the hills and rolling roads of the southern-most countryside in County Durham. Reaching out to the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at its furthest point, the route takes in some excellent climbs and some even better views.

Heading out from the home of the Darlington Mowden Park RFC, we bear north almost immediately, taking in the villages of Piercebridge and Staindrop, at which point the Short route splits and heads south.

The route continues north, climbing up to Butterknowle, eventually splitting at Woodland village with great views out over Langleydale. The Epic riders continue north, riding the edge of Hamsterley Forest before descending in to Wolsingham.

As you leave the main road at Frosterley you are faced with a tough climb to the top of Hill End, with views out over Bollihope Common and the burn at the bottom on the descent. We ride south through Bollihope Common and pass by Middleton-in-Teesdale, before climbing out of the valley towards Barnard Castle. The final push back west stretches through a series of quaint English villages typical of the County Durham area.

At the finish you will receive a warm welcome, medal and finisher t-shirt.

This classic sportive, named after and on the same route as the original Tour of the Peak road race, which ran from 1943 through to 2005, is steeped in cycling history; you will follow in the wheel tracks of some of the top original British bike racers who have graced these roads.

The long route is probably one of the toughest challenges that can be done at 115 miles and over 10,000ft of climbing, it certainly isn't to be underestimated! A little more tame but still with the Killer Mile of Winnats Pass, the medium route is 62 miles and manages to squeeze in over 5000ft of climbing - a great starting point if you're looking for a challenge and the long route is just too much! Bakewell Showground gives you beautiful surroundings to start and finish your day.

203km cycling event starting from Troutbeck Bridge, Cumbria. Controls at Caldbeck, Wasdale Head and Hawkshead, plus 2 information controls.

A very scenic anti-clockwise tour of The Lakes, starting near Windermere and taking in Caldbeck, Buttermere, Wasdale Head, Duddon Valley and Coniston, but avoiding the busy 'honeypots' and main tourist roads.

Only uses two well known passes, Kirkstone and Newlands, but takes in a few tough, though lesser known, climbs. Very little traffic, with splendid views of lakes and peaks too numerous to mention. Potential for lambs and bluebells. Refreshments and sleeping facilities in the pavilion before and after the event. BYO sleeping bag and mat. Please note that the 100km route is not on as a calendar event, but the perm cards will be on sale on the day.

Unashamedly based on the route of Ilkley Cycling Clubs brilliant annual sportive ride in the summer, the White Rose Classic, this ride covers much of the same ground, but throws in the awesome climb of the Cote de Arncliffe. The ride measures a few miles short of the medium route, so is a great way to test yourself ahead of the White Rose Classic itself, being held on 24th June 2018.

After a steady 7 mile warm up comes 1 mile of climbing up Norwood Edge followed by a steady descent to scenic Swinsty Reservoir. You then wind your way through a series of short climbs to the top of Greenhow Hill, then along the moor towards Grassington where the view up Wharfedale and beyond to Pen Y Ghent comes into your sights. After a short stretch up the Wharfe Valley turn left into Littondale and prepare yourself for the Cote de Arncliffe. The reward at the top is a breathtaking view to your left as well as one of the smoothest sections of tarmac in the Yorkshire Dales ... an absolute joy! Pass Malham Tarn on your left then take the quieter and less twisty descent into Malham village. The route returns to the Wharfe Valley via the rolling road to Hetton and Cracoe ready for the final infamous climb of Langbar.
