It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

Sportives don't get much more stunning than this ride through the Mendips Hills. Consistently voted as one of the best locations for cycling in the UK, the route dips into Cheddar Gorge which possesses a beauty, and a climb, that will take your breath away.

Starting just outside Glastonbury, this route takes you through spectacular Somerset, first heading north through a series of sheltered back lanes across the River Axe. The Wiggle Mendips sportive starts completely flat, and stays that way for much of the ride, but there are a handful of major climbs thrown in for good measure what else would you expect in a land littered with so many beautiful gorges?

Your first test will come around 15 miles in, and the small village of Easton acts as a passing point to flag the climbs start. Youll take in just under 850ft of ascending in a short space of time theres no hiding the fact that this is steep. The views are worth it, though, and once youve reached the top you can afford to sit back and roll through the next few miles, taking in the incredible natural scenery as you go.

The next test wont come for a while yet, as the route feeds through a series of secluded Somerset villages. Eventually youll pass through Blagdon, which is the final flat point before the next climb, which will take you higher than the last major one but doesnt take as much input, as youll have started from a hill-top position. Soon enough, its time to take in Cheddar Gorge in all its glory but will mean another major climb! Once youve passed this, its plain sailing back to ride HQ.

While the Wiggle Mendips Sportive can be considered tough - the Epic and Standard routes have some great climbs to tackle, including Cheddar Gorge - those with elevation phobia can always opt for our Short route. It might not take you through Cheddar but it is still equally beautiful and rewarding.

As stunning as it is challenging, the Wiggle Wye Valley Warrior sportive bridges the gap between England and Wales and gives you the best views, climbs and cycling roads of the border towns and villages of both states.

Starting out from Chepstow Racecourse, youll head for one of the main attractions straight away as youll tackle the hills of the Wye Valley first of all. Following the River Wye all the way, darting left and right as do the roads youre sure to enjoy the ride alongside the water. Sit up and absorb the stunning cliff faces and river below before criss-crossing once more and heading into England.

Once on the English part of the course, youll enter the Forest of Dean soon after leaving Wales. One or two small climbs wait in the Forests sheltered and remote roads, but they shouldnt make you too uncomfortable to enjoy the tranquillity and wilderness along the wooded roads.

Heading up through Ruspidge, youll bear left at Nailbridge and head west once more. Around Upper Lydbrook, youll meet the River Wye again and pass over it, although much closer inland compared to before. The winding country lanes continue, as the undulating terrain around the Welsh and English border will keep pushing you along on up-and-down sections.

Crossing the River Wye yet again, youre back on Welsh soil and on the home straight, although theres still time for a sizeable loop to harness the unique rolling hills in the area. The last couple of hills might smart with tired legs, but youd expect nothing less on such a comprehensive border-crossing tour of the valleys.
