It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

Dont be deceived by the picturesque Warwickshire scenery on view in the Wiggle Tempest the countryside climbs will creep up on you soon enough as you cross the River Avon and pass through a number of quaint and pretty old typically English villages.

Starting just outside Warwick south of Birmingham, this is the perfect chance for Birmingham sportive hunters to ply their trade. After leaving the county town youll head straight onwards on one of several of the rides Roman roads, passing Wolverton and eventually turning off at Little Alne on what will have been plain sailing so far, as far as any gain in gradient is concerned.

Looping around, youll continue on the fast and technical small country lanes until reaching the first feed stop in Binton. Back in the saddle, its back onto the long and straight roads as you edge away at the miles. On the longest straight section of the course, which passes through Honeybourne, a village typical of the area, youll take on the biggest climb of the ride, which peaks at around 750ft of elevation gain.

The rest of the ride will feel more broken up after taking on the long straight, as youll pass through a number of sleepy villages on the way back to the Warwick ride HQ, where youll receive a finishers medal and recovery product on completion of the ride. Its a tough day out on the longest distance but very rewarding all the same.

The Kidderminster Killer is a challenging 215km endurance ride incorporating many of the best climbs and scenery that Worcestershire, Shropshire and The Marches can provide. If you are easily bored of flat routes, the Kidderminster Killer will keep you entertained from start to finish. This audax is right as a classic and challenging audax.

As the little sister of the Kidderminster Killer, this 120km audax provides an epic adventure into rural and hilly South Shropshire along a figure of 8 route. A fantastic route, and roller coaster of hilly countryside, for those seeking a challenging, but not overly far, audax ride. It is lumpy with 2000m of climb but the views are rewarding.

The Swan Cycle sportive is a fantastic adventure through the Worcestershire countryside from one of the best pubs in Worcestershire taking you along the most scenic routes. With three distances of 10, 30 and 70 miles this sportive is for everyone!

As an end of summer sportive test, The Swan Cycle II pretty much has it all. Weaving around rural roads in the county of Worcestershire the route will give you some challenging climbs, winding roads and amazing views.

We have added an additional Family Ride which is for adults and children (above 12 years of age). The family is a 10 mile route along country roads and passing woods and on a fairly gentle route.

The Fun Ride route has a steady start taking you north through Drayton and Belbroughton until you begin to climb the Clent. You'll then pass through small villages such as a Elmley Lovett, Hartlebury as you head south where you have an opportunity to recharge at a refreshment stop along the way.

Starting to head back towards the Event HQ in Chaddesley Corbett, you'll have a feeling of accomplishment and excitement as you reconvene with your friends and family at The Swan Inn.

For those taking on the Challenge Route you will head south towards Upton Warren along fantastic relatively flats country roads. Coming back around going through Lower and Upper Bentley you will see the Lickey Hills in your sights for one last climb.

From here on in, there is a relatively flattish route towards the finish with the odd spike in gradient, as you can head back through the quiet and undisturbed rural roads at a pace to suit you.

The Tommy Godwin Challenge sportive was set up in 2013 to honour the memory of 1948 Olympic cycling medallist Tommy Godwin. All profits go to fund the West Midlands Marie Curie Hospice in Solihull where Tommy spent his last few days. So far we have raised over 60,000.

There are three routes, 30, 73 and 100km. The 30km ride is for families and the less experienced cyclists. The more challenging 100km sportive route and the intermediate 73km sportive route both have a refreshment stop and timing. The well-signed routes wend their way through the Warwickshire lanes, with the 100km sportive making a brief foray into Worcestershire via Feckenham. There are a couple of fords en route for the adventurous, but don't worry there are alternative paths! With only a couple of climbs, it's the ideal end of season event both for the experienced rider and those looking for their first sportive after a summer of training.

There are no expensive fees, no headline sponsors, no goodie bags, no numbers, no gold standard times, no broom wagons and no pretending at the finish to have looked into the jaws of hell and survived.

The Autumn Audax is cycling at its best. Its about a good distance in a day, riding at a sensible pace with good company, traveling through the quiet and pleasant countryside in the orange glow of an autumn day before winter arrives.

The once popular 'Beyond the Dyke' organized by Alan Mason, disappeared off the calendar some fifteen years ago following his retirement. Well, the event is now back by popular demand. Like King Offa, we will be sending an army of cyclists over the Dyke into the badlands of Mid-Wales. These border raiders will be challenged by some charming countryside which continually varies from the airy views from Brown Clee to the deep cleft valleys near the striking Knucklas Viaduct. On their return, the riders will pass through the tranquil and delightful Teme Valley before a final assault over the Abberley Hills.

Leaving Cannock Chase on tree lines roads we soon head out into the countryside, riding over Blithfield Reservoir and on to the steepest climb of the day, Buttermilk Hill (a modest 13%). A generous supply of High5 energy products and cake should keep you going before a final climb into the Chase and back to base.
