What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

The Brewin Dolphin New Forest Summer Sportive takes you out to conquer the wonders of the New Forest, promising to be packed with wildlife and scenic views over the national park. You are sure to have a spectacular day.

We will take you along coastal route via Calshot, Lepe, and Exbury, passing through the gorgeous Lepe Country Park along the way.

The beautiful village of Beaulieu is also on this route. Short route riders will take on the climb to Hatchet pond then along to Brockenhurst to rejoin the rest of the pack. Epic and Standard riders head north west to Lyndhurst, passing the quaint forest railway station at Beaulieu road. After a quick glance at the bustling town well push on up to Ashurst before tracking along the eastern edge of the forest.

From here we will head deeper in to the heart of the old royal hunting ground, eventually reaching the small hamlet of Fritham. At this point the Standard riders will carry on south towards Bolderwood, while Epic riders continue their journey north for a loop that winds its way in and out of the most northerly border of the forest. Heading south, the riders regroup just before passing under the A31, striking a definite course south towards the focal point of the ride - a spectacular stint through Ornamental Drive. It is here you will see the best the forest has to offer.

The New Forest offers some great cycling and some spectacular scenery. There are sections with long open straights that are truly exhilarating, some punchy hills, and also some longer gradual climbs. The maximum gradient is at Blissford hill near the end of each route where you will encounter a 25% climb. This is a short sharp climb that looks like a wall as you approach it. The routes have been designed to encounter as little traffic as possible, and there are minimal miles on bigger roads. In places, the routes narrow to single lanes and extra care will need to be taken on these sections. Riders will also need to be extremely careful when passing any of the livestock that resides in this wonderful part of the country. Horses, in particular, tend to get easily spooked by passing cyclists, so please take care while enjoying what has become a favourite fixture in many peoples cycling calendar.

The 102 mile epic route offers the more experienced sportive rider a fantastic challenge, and completely showcases the fantastic New Forest National Park. Be warned though the last 20 miles of the epic route are the hilliest!

New Forest Rattler Sportive

Rockford, Hampshire, GB

Much like the Wiggle New Forest Spring sportive, which runs earlier in the year, this event also takes pride in being a must do on many cyclists tick lists. As a result, this has also sold out long before the day on each of the years it has run, so book now to avoid disappointment.

One of the highlight of this ride are the first blushes of autumn colour present in the national parks foilage transforming the forest into a southern English wonderland. As a result of this mollifying scenery, combined with a relatively low 4,461ft of climbing, the Epic 100-mile route for those who choose it could potentially be one of the easiest century rides youll do.

Youll start your ride by crossing the River Avon and soon head into the pretty New Forest village of Ringwood. Threading through country lanes on the outskirts of the Park, youll soon head into the Forest itself and through the small villages of Linwood and Fritham Youll almost certainly come across free-roaming New Forest ponies, and maybe cattle or donkeys slow down and give them a wide berth when they are on or beside the road.

Once at the village of Wick, Epic riders will head off for a long loop along the sheltered back lanes east of Salisbury, taking in attractive scenery in such areas as Farley, West Winterslow and West Dean. Once the extra miles have been added its time to rejoin the main route and youll skip back to the other side of the River Avon and head through Cranborne, Verwood and Three Legged Cross on the way back to the finish line. The short and punchy climbs will suit the budding puncheurs on the sportive circuit. Join thousands of other riders by signing up for your place now.

Somerley House and Gardens is not usually open to the public; however, as an added bonus, riders and supporters will have the chance to view some of the state rooms within the house and have access to the gardens on the event day.

14th October, Salisbury, Wiltshire

Salisbury Race Course, 14th October 2018

The Gold Rush is an intense ride, featuring 75, 55 & 38km routes, criss-crossing the lanes and droves of the Chalke Valley en route to Shaftesburys iconic Gold Hill, then brining you back to the start on a series of long, fast CX perfect drove roads. The ride offers full and comprehensive route marking, feed and support stations and electronic rider timing, and there will be hot and cold food, drinks and snacks, plus free energy products.

This is perfect CX country in fact it could have been created for the event. The course area is a natural amphitheatre for your riding pleasure. The tiny river Ebble traces the floor of the valley that forms the backbone of a course which winds you constantly up and downs to the north and south. The ancient drove roads atop each of these downs, along with the narrow valley road, form the main arteries of the route, while the lanes, tracks and trails between the three weave in the detail; testing climbs that top out at 20%, descents that will send your stupid grin count off the scale, and a procession of picture box villages, scenery and views to lift your soul!

Highlight of the route is the climb of Gold Hill (the iconic setting for the classic Hovis advert); a 1 in 4 gradient on (occasionally) grippy cobbles that will test your heart, legs and grimacing skills! Its a true classic of a climb that should be on your bucket list, and youll get a special award if you can ride the whole thing clean!

Other course highlights include Zig-Zag Hill (in both directions), which boasts the most hairpins of any hill in Britain; gradients of up to 20% dropping into (and climbing out of!) the steep, Chalke Valley, and of course those long, straight, gently descending drove roads to the finish (some of the best gravel riding tracks around!)
