What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

To celebrate Tour de France month, the ride will follow a large part of the 2014 Grand Depart day 1 route. This is a real epic route and includes 4 of the most iconic climbs in the UK as well as the 3 beautiful dales of Wharfedale, Wensleydale and Swaledale.

The rolling route up Wharfedale to Buckden warms you up nicely for the first climb of Fleet Moss and the stunning beauty of the source of the river Wharfe. A quick descent to Hawes follows and then, after passing the hotel of the famous Top Gear steak incident, its the majestic Buttertubs. You need a pause at the top before the next descent as the view down to Swaledale is guaranteed to take your breath away! A much needed flatish section follows before the next climb of Grinton Moor and then the Cote de Cray before you coast back into Wharfedale and enjoy the pleasant canter back down the valley.

There is an option on this route for the slower group/s to shorten the route and miss out 2 climbs. The group/s will make a communal decision after reaching Hawes.

One Saturday each month from March to September we are hosting a fully supported challenge ride. The routes are incredibly varied with each one having its own very distinct character to show off the wide variety of terrain and scenery in the Yorkshire Dales and the South Pennines.

The rides are an exclusive individual guided and supported experience similar to a sportive ride in that there is a set route, but are not timed. What you get over and above a typical sportive is a pre-ride bike check, a support vehicle and team mechanic, the benefit of riding in a small group with your own dedicated ride leader and a top caf stop. The rides are a great way of exploring new territory in the safe hands of YVT and will be of interest to local riders as well as visitors to the area. We guarantee to give you an epic day out that will stay long in your memory! If you are concerned about running out of energy on the ride, there are up to 4 spaces available in the support vehicle, so you can hop on board if necessary.

Struggle Moors will take place on 8 July 2018. The event begins in the stunning setting of Ampleforth Abbey, North Yorkshire and takes riders over 110 miles of challenging terrain among breathtaking Yorkshire Moors landscape.

The route has been dubbed as one of the hardest cycling events in the UK, with riders continuing their training following Struggle Dales to take on this monster event. Cycling Weekly reviewed it as: One of the best days out and something to aspire to.

Struggle The Moors sportive takes you over notorious Yorkshire Moors climbs such as Boltby Bank and Carlton Bank, Cote de Grosmont (as seen in the Tour de Yorkshire 2016), the aptly name Glaisdale Horror and finally the infamous Rosedale Chimney Bank.
