What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

We will be camping on Friday prior to the event. On Friday evening we will have a navigation skills seminar as a tune-up for the races on Saturday. These will run from 5 pm until 7pm on Friday. They will be led by experienced adventure racers who can share years of race experience and stories. On Saturday evening after the events we will have a good evening to share stories if you care to join us. Saturday evening camping will also be available.

On Saturday, teams will check in and stage their equipment (bikes, boats) as directed near the start area. Teams must be checked in, have equipment staged and be ready to attend the pre-race briefing at 7:30am. Route instructions and maps will be distributed during the pre-race briefing. Teams will have a few minutes to review the route and maps prior to the start. Teams may remain near the start area to plot routes or adjust equipment once the start has occurred. Part of adventure racing is to quickly prepare for any discipline and quickly plan routes and strategies, or at least the beginnings of them. Continuing to plot and strategize as you move is another adventure race skill.

Our event includes an official CTC double century as well as a single century option. Both rides start and finish in Castro Valley, California.

Our double century route has three segments on which we include an experience filled with many of the best and most memorable cycling roads offered in the San Francisco Bay Area. The first segment has many small climbs and descents heading North to Grizzly Peak and back.

The most challenging part of the route is the second segment, which climbs and descends Mt. Diablo.

The third and final segment of the double century ride travels to these other great cycling offerings in the Bay Area: Sunol-Ohlone Regional Park, the Livermore vineyards, and the foothills of Mt. Diablo. The final 60 miles are less demanding, resulting in a finish without any significant challenging climbs.
