What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

Theres a reason holidaymakers flock to the Cotswolds in their droves its amazingly scenic countryside makes for the perfect weekends cycling. A selection of great climbs and miles of rolling rural roads provide an ideal mix for a day in the saddle.

Soon after you set off from the venue, youll be faced with one of the first major climbing tests of the event straight away. Moving up Round Hill, make sure to catch your breath and check out the magnificent surrounding views as you crest the climb.

Once youve reached the top of this climb, its plain sailing until the next big ascent as you can concentrate on peddling away the miles and taking in the surrounding scenery at the same time. A reassuring downhill drop will open up just before passing Toddington Stanway hold onto your bars, as this is fast one.

Sure enough, as inviting descents come, uphill challenges will lie in wait as youll be out of the saddle again soon after to tackle the next hill between Snowshill and Saintbury. As soon as this is behind you, though, youll be able to power through the final few miles on a series of fast and technical country lanes leading back to Cheltenham. A finishers medal, t-shirt and well-earned PowerBar recovery product wait for you at ride HQ.

The Swan Cycle sportive is a fantastic adventure through the Worcestershire countryside from one of the best pubs in Worcestershire taking you along the most scenic routes. With three distances of 10, 30 and 70 miles this sportive is for everyone!

As an end of summer sportive test, The Swan Cycle II pretty much has it all. Weaving around rural roads in the county of Worcestershire the route will give you some challenging climbs, winding roads and amazing views.

We have added an additional Family Ride which is for adults and children (above 12 years of age). The family is a 10 mile route along country roads and passing woods and on a fairly gentle route.

The Fun Ride route has a steady start taking you north through Drayton and Belbroughton until you begin to climb the Clent. You'll then pass through small villages such as a Elmley Lovett, Hartlebury as you head south where you have an opportunity to recharge at a refreshment stop along the way.

Starting to head back towards the Event HQ in Chaddesley Corbett, you'll have a feeling of accomplishment and excitement as you reconvene with your friends and family at The Swan Inn.

For those taking on the Challenge Route you will head south towards Upton Warren along fantastic relatively flats country roads. Coming back around going through Lower and Upper Bentley you will see the Lickey Hills in your sights for one last climb.

From here on in, there is a relatively flattish route towards the finish with the odd spike in gradient, as you can head back through the quiet and undisturbed rural roads at a pace to suit you.

Finish the 2018 Challenge Rides series on a blinder, this is one of our favourite routes! An undulating 20 miles to start with takes us to the foot of the infamous Park Rash, which we think is the toughest climb in the Dales! The reward for reaching the top though is a superb 12 mile descent to the town of Middleham and then on to a great cafe which serves the most wonderful selection of homemade food. Refuelled we catch a bit of the TdF day1 route and then head over to Pateley Bridge ready for the last significant climb of Nought Bank. Save a bit in the tank though as the final few miles are a bit more than rolling!

With an epic 23 percent climb and a timed lap of the international Oulton Park Circuit among the route highlights its easy to see why!

Starting out at the revered Oulton Park Race Circuit you'll start off with an untimed lap of the circuit, which as well as easing you into the sportive gives you an opportunity to recce the circuit before that all-important timed lap.

The route* takes riders through the Southern Uplands and into Edinburgh incorporating the best sections of numerous Scottish cycle racing circuits, including the A77 10 Mile Time Trial, sections of the Moscow APR and the Strathaven Anderside Classic, taking in steep climbs around Muirkirk and undulating stretches across wild moorland.
