What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

Finish the 2018 Challenge Rides series on a blinder, this is one of our favourite routes! An undulating 20 miles to start with takes us to the foot of the infamous Park Rash, which we think is the toughest climb in the Dales! The reward for reaching the top though is a superb 12 mile descent to the town of Middleham and then on to a great cafe which serves the most wonderful selection of homemade food. Refuelled we catch a bit of the TdF day1 route and then head over to Pateley Bridge ready for the last significant climb of Nought Bank. Save a bit in the tank though as the final few miles are a bit more than rolling!

The Pedal for Scotland Big Belter is a Sportive ride of 110 miles from Glasgow to Edinburgh. The ride uses the same start and finish points as the Classic Challenge ride, but takes a completely separate route through the Scottish Borders, meaning you get the buzz of Scotlands biggest bike event on a quieter route designed for serious road cyclists. The transport service will serve Big Belter riders too, meaning there is an easy and hassle free way to get you and your bike to the start in Glasgow Green, or back home from Edinburgh at the finish.

The route* takes riders through the Southern Uplands and into Edinburgh incorporating the best sections of numerous Scottish cycle racing circuits, including the A77 10 Mile Time Trial, sections of the Moscow APR and the Strathaven Anderside Classic, taking in steep climbs around Muirkirk and undulating stretches across wild moorland. The Big Belter is a much more challenging ride for keen road cyclists.

The UKCE Fell Beast Sportive has been tailored to be the most spectacular course we have ever designed.

With almost 7,000ft of Cumbrian climbing to tackle over the Epic route, the Beast will test you on some tough climbs yet reward you with a series of scintillating descents mixed with gentle drops that allow you to take in some of the most impressive views in the country.

Heading out from Carlisle Racecourse, the route heads south immediately and to our first climb of the day to the top of Warnell Fell. Shortly after the climb you are rewarded with the first panoramic views of the day, looking out over the Lake District National Park. Here, the Short route continues south to Caldbeck, while Standard and Epic riders bear west to Aspatria before bearing south again towards the National Park.

After crossing the River Derwent, we reach Bassenthwaite Lake at which the course splits for the final time as Standard riders move east and Epic riders continue south for a big reward.

The first of which is Lorton Vale, with grand fells and crags to your left and views over Crummock Water to your right. After passing Buttermere Lake, we reach our goal for the ride Honister Pass with crags looming either side of the road. A tough climb to the top ensues while the peaks of the slate mine area offer views out over the Borrowdale Fells.

We now descend in to Borrowdale and skirt the edge of Derwent Water before cutting through Keswick to rejoin the Standard loop at the top of Bassenthwaite Lake. From here we rejoin the Short route and hug the edge of the National Park before heading north to the finish line, where a finishers medal and t-shirt wait for you.

The White Horse is a fine way to end your Sportive Season.

With three distance options there is something to suit all abilities. From the 26 mile short route with one challenge climb, the Medium route with some major hills and the long route which tackles both Carlton and White Horse Bank. The routes are all really well designed and though the distances are not overly long there are no sections which are just there to get from A to B. Every mile is on beautiful North Yorkshire Country roads with great views, breath taking views and hardly a car in sight.

As well as the climbs we enjoy some fast and challenging descents and some great sections which are our personnel favorites but hardly known by local riders. The medium and long enjoy a brilliant 15 mile section from the White Horse to Osmotherley, roads you wont know well but will do soon!

Everyone arrives back at the HQ with a real buzz, as we twist through the empty lanes with only cyclists in sight well be lost in what a wonderful route the White Horse is and how enjoyable riding these roads in a Velo29 Event really can be.
