What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

The Wiggle Devils Punch takes in the best of the North Downs and the surrounding area including the Devils Punch Bowl, from which it takes its name - for some of the best hill-packed, fun riding in Hampshire and Surrey.

A little shorter than most other rides to reflect the time of year, this could be the perfect wind-down for your legs as an end-of-season test.

The start of the route is kind on the legs, giving you chance to warm up as youll head out of the Holybourne start point, near Alton. The gradient will lead you mostly downhill before facing the first small climb of the day, on the sheltered back roads near Ropley Dean soon after which the first feed stop awaits to give you chance to recover.

The course continues east, travelling through small villages such as Lower Farringdon, Sellborne and Blackmoor. Looping around the outskirts of Bordon, its soon time to take on the Devils Punch Bowl, which is where the true challenge of the day lies in wait. The scenery around the attraction is worth the effort while itll test your legs on the short yet sharp climbs, the scenery is incredible.

Few challenges will present themselves as dramatically as this, but there is still the matter of the amount of miles youll need to cover before crossing the finish line. A series of fast descents and steep climbs stand between you and a medal on a tough but very rewarding ride.

As the light draws in and the evenings get shorter, youll want to get out on the bike when you can. The Wiggle Royal Flyer is the perfect autumn sportive taking in the Royal Sandringham Estate in Norfolk and the tree-lined avenues around it, allowing you to charge through the autumnal leaves on the ground before crossing the finish line for a well-earned end-of-season break.

Setting off from the event centre on Fakenham Racecourse, this sportive starts off with a few gentle climbs as riders will head east and roll through the pretty villages of Guist and Hindrigham, and onto the equally-appealing St Marys Benedictine Priory and Binham.

Staying inland, youll continue westwards on this typically flat section of east England heading through South Creake, Stanhoe and Docking. A feed station gives riders chance to catch their breath before the route enters the grounds of the Sandringham Estate, which always looks grand in autumnal colours.

Only a short ride then separates you from the royal grounds and a finishers medal back in Fakenham, passing the Royal Stud and continuing on back lanes through Anmer, East Rudham and Helhoughton. The short climbs on the Wiggle Royal Flyer may test untrained legs but this should be a welcome challenge for more seasoned riders to get a fast sportive time in the bag before turning to the turbo for winter.

An established fixture on the RIDE IT calendar, and ever popular with riders, this is a great way to clock up the miles before the winter sets in.

We start in Biggin Hill and are instantly out into the country touring some of the best country lanes through Kent. The North Downs feature heavily on this ride, alongside some swooping descents and tricky climbs, including Toys Hill and Titsey Hill. This is a tough ride but the climbing is rewarded with quick descents and far-reaching views which will make all the efforts worthwhile.

This event has sold out previously, so please be aware that on the day entries are unlikely to be available.

The 2018 Its Knott Winter sportive will support the Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital Charitys Helipad appeal, with all profits going to the Charity. For more information about the charity and the Helipad appeal, visit http://www.rmchcharity.org.uk/helipad-appeal

The route will follow a loop anti-clockwise around the Lancashire/Yorkshire border, taking in the spectacular climb of Bowland Knotts (hence the Sportive name), looping back around the beautiful Ribble Valley back to Green Jersey for hot soup.

We would like to encourage riders to cycle year round and become winter warriors, not just summer softies! With appropriate clothing and lighting, cycling can be enjoyed whatever the season.

The ride will take in quiet roads around the Ribble Valley and head out as far as Giggleswick on the 100km route. It will be well signed and marshalled, and there will be hot drinks and food available back in Green Jersey in Clitheroe.

The Wiggle Kent Classic Sportive has been designed to take you out of Surrey and into Kent for what will surely be a memorable day in the saddle.

Setting off from the village of Lingfield you will be out in the country before you know it, as all three routes head south to Wych Cross taking in the first of many quaint little villages youll cycle through during the ride. It is around this point, at the 7-mile mark, that youll tackle the first real steady climb of the day.

At Colemans Hatch, the Short route riders can relax knowing that theyve completed the hardest part of their ride with only two steady climbs left to tackle. Its at this point they will split off from the other routes as they head North towards Edenbridge.

Epic and Standard riders, however, go straight into the steepest climb of the day as they pass through Newbridge and make their way toward Royal Tunbridge Wells.

Shortly past Groombridge, the course divides again as the Standard riders head north with Royal Tunbridge Wells to their East. They wont see the Epic riders again until they reach Sevenoaks, having taken in Langton Green, Penshurst and Chiddingstone, to name but a few of the villages along the route.

Epic riders continue East as they ride into the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are a few short climbs along this section of the course that might take you by surprise. Notable elevation changes occur around Goudhurst, another just past Yalding and a third at Roughway. These should serve as nice testers to get you warmed up for the final climb at Dunks Green, that ascends steadily for several miles before peaking at Sevenoaks Common. It is here that youll embark on a nice descent before re-joining the Standard riders once again. From here, its a 14-mile ride back to Lingfield, via the village of Edenbridge, with no major challenges looming.

With three routes to choose from, The Wiggle Kent Classic Sportive has something to offer cyclists of all abilities, whether youre a beginner or someone that likes a bit of a challenge - all the while soaking in some of the best countryside Britain has to offer. After all, Kent is called The Garden of England for a reason.

For our fifth visit to the area, weve teamed up with Cycling Mallory, an exciting new organisation devoted to all things cycling.

Based from the impressive Mallory Park in the heart of the Leicestershire countryside, were ideally setup for a great days riding. Not only is this a fantastic location to start a ride, all participants will get a couple of laps on the motor circuit included in the entry fee! Once youve warmed up on the track, its straight out into the countryside for an autumn-winter road fest. The routes are fairly flat with undulating sections but a great chance to clock up some end of year miles. Quiet country lanes form the most part and make for a fantastic day in the saddle, whether youre taking on the 30, 50 or 70 mile option.

Once youve burnt enough calories to start thinking about the following months festivities, head back to the event centre for a finishing warm down lap and hot chocolate.
