What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

The Tour of Cambridgeshire Festival is one of a kind; a mass-participation cycling festival for those who have a love and passion for a diverse type of bike and event. Our aim is to bring all types of cycling into one event, bringing all types of cycling together, enabling more and more people who have a love for any kind of cycling to be involved. The event is held at the East of England Arena and Showground from 1st-3rd June 2018, with a number of different disciplines, which are all held on fully closed roads.

There are 9 Events within the Festival: Gran Fondo Race, Gran Fondo Sportive, Chrono, Team Chrono, Mellow Vlo, Tour classic, Family Fondo, Folding Bike Race & Gravel Enduro Relay, as well as the Cambridgeshire Bike Show.

The Tour of Cambridgeshire has quickly become one of the most popular events in the UK, with the first being held in 2015. The route starts and ends in Peterborough. This part of the country is reminiscent of Western Flanders with unprotected roads, canals and narrow tracks. Luckily, there are a lot of riders to form a bunch and share the work. The locals come out in huge numbers to cheer on all the riders and help create a great atmosphere.

A 300km cycling event starting from Pendleton, Lancashire. A clockwise circuit of northern England, with the ascent to the summit of Great Dun Fell, Britain's highest paved road at 847m the 'highlight' of the ride!

The 6th edition of the toughest Peak District sportive. The Peak Epic is one of the UKs most challenging road cycling events. Comparable to the Fred Whitton and Dragon Ride.

The ride starts and finishes from Lady Manners School in the beautiful Peak District market town of Bakewell. The truly epic long route ascends 4000m/ >13000ft in just 166km/ 103 miles* 169km / 105 miles for 2017, across the full breadth of Peaks taking in the Hope Valley, Edale, Chapel-en-le-Frith, The Goyt Valley/Cat & Fiddle, Macclesfield Forest, Axe Edge, Longnor and finally Lathkill Dale.

*the original long route is 166 km but due to a long term road closure the 2017 event was 169 km. If the road reopens in time for 2018 event we will revert back to the original route.

The majority of the ride is held on narrow country lanes away from the traffic filled A and B roads. The terrain is relentless, continuously up and down, twisting and turning leading to low average speeds e.g the average finish time last year for the long route was 9 hours. The Peak Epic is certainly not to be underestimated!

At the foot of all the named climbs there will be climb boards depicting average and max gradient (%), climb length in (km), vertical ascent (m) these will be accompanied by climb summit signs at the top. However do not be fooled into thinking the only climbs on the route are the named ones. There are plenty of hidden non climbs scattered throughout.

The north pennines area of outstanding natural beauty is one of those rare gems in the British landscape, a place where theres space to breathe, think, to see, and to ride, for miles and miles - ideal for the Pennine Pedaler Adventure Cross event.

Comprising of open moors and peatlands, tucked away dales, meadows and woodlands, its a diverse and beautiful area criss-crossed with a network of bridleways, forest roads, byways, old railway lines, quiet tarred lanes and roads making it a fantastic landscape to explore by bike and a perfect Adventure Cross ride.

The Pennine Pedaler Adventure Cross is a new route for the 2017 season. We think it offers a different challenge from the other events in the Adventure Cross series as there are simply so many different types of surface and terrain to be tackled.

Both the Massif (long) and Mini Massif (short) routes start with a bang and begin with a road climb out of Weardale before topping out on the moors and taking to the first off road sector on the Waskerley Way.
