What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

Prudential RideLondon: an annual festival of cycling - A true legacy of the 2012 Games

Developed by the Mayor of London and his agencies in 2013, Prudential RideLondon is a world-class festival of cycling. The fifth edition will take place over the weekend of 28-29 July 2018.

There is no other closed-road event like it that combines the fun and accessible element of a free family ride in central London with the excitement of watching the worlds best professional cyclists race in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic and Prudential RideLondon Classique.

Taking a cue from the London Marathon, amateur cyclists also participate in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 a 100-mile challenge on the same closed roads as the professionals, with the added incentive of raising money for good causes. For the first time in 2016, the event also featured the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 46 a 46-mile sportive created specifically for newer and also younger cyclists.

The Hertfordshire 100 will take place on August 26th, 2018

The Hertfordshire 100!
This sportive was our first and weve branched out a lot since then, but this ride will always be special to us. This year weve done a lot of work tweaking the route. This ride reflects that and its 6th birthday should make for the most enjoyable Hertfordshire 100 yet.

This event has been used in the past as a warm up the day before to the Spring Onion. In 2017 we decided to move it to Good Friday but in 2018 we have moved it to 2/9/2018 as we do not want it to impact the 10th Spring Onion and so it has an identity of its own. The name of event is derived from the chain set most of us use and is a shorter sharper course which could attract riders who don't want to do higher mileage - so something for every body.

Providing you complete the course within the cut off time you will automatically go on the European Cycle Events list for a 25 voucher for any European cycle trip on their web site. These vouchers can not be transferred to anybody else and can not be used in conjunction with any other offer ,valid for any event taken by 31st December 2019.
