What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

Leave the buzz of the city behind you as you face the challenge of a 54 mile journey on two wheels on the iconic London to Brighton Cycle. You will start from Clapham Common, travelling through idyllic country lanes as you ride through Mitcham, picturesque Carshalton, Chipstead, Banstead, Haywards Heath and finally finish on the colourful and bustling Brighton seafront. The spirit of the event is 'taking part' not 'winning' so you can go as fast or as slow as you like.

This event has been used in the past as a warm up the day before to the Spring Onion. In 2017 we decided to move it to Good Friday but in 2018 we have moved it to 2/9/2018 as we do not want it to impact the 10th Spring Onion and so it has an identity of its own. The name of event is derived from the chain set most of us use and is a shorter sharper course which could attract riders who don't want to do higher mileage - so something for every body.

Providing you complete the course within the cut off time you will automatically go on the European Cycle Events list for a 25 voucher for any European cycle trip on their web site. These vouchers can not be transferred to anybody else and can not be used in conjunction with any other offer ,valid for any event taken by 31st December 2019. And after long days in the saddle and some strenuous hill-climbs, the sight of the Eiffel Tower, your finishing point, will evoke a real sense of achievement.

London to Paris Cycle – September 2018

Our London to Paris Bike Ride is an awesome cycling challenge and is by far one of the best fundraising events in Europe, attracting hundreds of riders each year and raising thousands for charities nationwide.

Well spend 4 days in the saddle, cycling 308 miles from capital to capital. Our journey begins in London with the route taking us through glorious English countryside as we cycle from Kent to Dover, before crossing the Channel to Calais. Once across the water, we start cycling French style, remembering to keep to the right! We cycle along quiet French country lanes, through traditional market towns with views of the rolling green hills of Northern France, passing the war memorials and cemeteries of the Somme.

A spectacular finish awaits us as we reach the home stretch up the Champs Elyses to the Arc de Triomphe, before reaching the piece de resistance, the Eiffel Tower, which marks our finish line. The days in the saddle may be long but the sense of achievement well feel crossing the finish line and the euphoric atmosphere as we celebrate our achievements in this magnificent capital, the saddle soreness soon wears off!

LEtape London by Le Tour de France, organised by Human Race and in support of Access Sport brings the glamour of the Tour de France to the capital, following sister event the Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride. The open roads route for the event takes in much of Stage Three of the 2014 Tour de France route and culminates spectacularly with a lap of honour around the Lee Valley VeloPark at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, home of the London 2012 Games. It sold out in 2015, making it a must-ride event for those lucky enough to get a place.
