What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

Ride with former Welsh Rugby Union star Shane Williams MBE at this last club, Amman Utd RFC. It just so happens to be an ideal starting location to explore the surrounding countryside of Carmarthenshire by bike. And what a countryside it is; the roads, hills and vistas are among some of the best cycling routes in the UK.

You will go over the impressive Black Mountain, through the Brecon Beacons National park, ride through the centre of the historic Welsh market towns of Llandovery and Brecon as well as the numerous picturesque valley villages and hamlets and mountain passes along the way. All with a mixture of decent climbs, technical downhills and nice long flat stretches. The two course are challenging but also achievable for all and with the timing of the event being mid October its ideal for one last ride of the season, or a social gathering after a hard season of competing or even a personal challenge to build up to throughout the year. There's something for everyone.

There are no expensive fees, no headline sponsors, no goodie bags, no numbers, no gold standard times, no broom wagons and no pretending at the finish to have looked into the jaws of hell and survived.

The Autumn Audax is cycling at its best. Its about a good distance in a day, riding at a sensible pace with good company, traveling through the quiet and pleasant countryside in the orange glow of an autumn day before winter arrives.

The once popular 'Beyond the Dyke' organized by Alan Mason, disappeared off the calendar some fifteen years ago following his retirement. Well, the event is now back by popular demand. Like King Offa, we will be sending an army of cyclists over the Dyke into the badlands of Mid-Wales. These border raiders will be challenged by some charming countryside which continually varies from the airy views from Brown Clee to the deep cleft valleys near the striking Knucklas Viaduct. On their return, the riders will pass through the tranquil and delightful Teme Valley before a final assault over the Abberley Hills.

The Hildenborough Sportive is a 100km event that starts from our own base in Hildenborough, Kent. It's a great ride at the end of the season on a challenging course.

The ride starts from our studio in Hildenborough then heads to Sevenoaks. Once up Riverhill, the ride goes over the back of Ide Hill and into Edenbridge. From there on the ride goes uphill taking in Forest Row and then heading to 'The Wall' on the Ashdown Forest.

Our end of season sportive is a great way to end the sportive calendar. Our event has a relaxed atmosphere but offers and challenging course for the rider. The route goes straight into a climb taking on Riverhill then settles as you ride towards Edenbridge. From here the climbing starts taking you up to Forest Row, then to the Ashdown forest where you climb 'The Wall'. Circle around the top of the forest with spectacular views to then ride back to Hildenborough.
