What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

In its second year, the Nottinghamshire Wheeler Sportive has been given an earlier slot in the calendar giving you a chance to take in the brisk and winding byways of rural Nottinghamshire during the summer months. If you enjoyed last years Autumnal ride, youre going to love it this year.

The routes start out from Southwell Racecourse and after cutting through Southwell itself riders head out north, winding through quaint English villages on gently undulating terrain, all the while tracking the River Trent for the first 20 or so miles. After passing through Sutton-on-Trent, Short route riders will point their steeds west towards Tuxford, while Epic and Standard riders continue on a northerly track. Here the Epic and Standard routes take in more of glorious Nottinghamshire: crossing railway lines and canals, bisecting swathes of pastureland you really begin to get a sense of the area.

There are no sudden climbs to note in these early stages of the ride to catch you unawares but make sure you leave a little in the tank for the latter stages of the course.

After reaching Retford riders will work their way south, dropping down through the lovely village of Egmanton before cycling on to Farnsfield. The Epic and Standard routes will split for a second time with the Epic riders continuing south and the Standard riders making a break for home, heading out east and returning through Southwell for the last time.

At this point, Epic riders turn west initially as they begin to climb higher to the town of Rainworth. From here youll head south to Calverton where you will find Georges Lane - a climb that may test you a bit if you havent kept up with your training during the spring months.

After a quick descent into Woodborough, youll have a short recovery before we test you one final time, before the home stretch. Lingwood Lane is a short-lived climb with a short respite half way up, before the final 9% kick at the top. Take time to catch your breath now as it is all downhill for here, giving you a chance to take in the sights along the river Trent.

Short but tough
Tackle the famous hill climbs in the Matlock/Derwent Valley area.

Matlock and the surrounding area is steeped with road biking hill climb history: Bank Road, Riber Road and Rowsley Bar to name just three of the well known infamous ascents. The Matlock Top 10 celebrates the richness of the areas steep, 20% plus gradient hill climbs by creating a route that ascends 10 of them in just 61.5 km/38.2 miles. Thats 1736 m of ascent or 5696 ft in old money.

For those looking for a slightly less extreme challenge then the Matlock Top 4 is for you 32.7 km/20.3 miles based around the same route as the Top 10 but climbing just 4 of the 10 climbs.
