What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

This is a sportive of two halves for Standard and Epic riders, at least. Those taking part in the longer ride will take in both parts on an afternoon spent on the best rolling roads in Northamptonshire. The route is typical of the county without too many climbing challenges, while taking in stunning villages lined with limestone houses and elegant churches, as well as a number of other prominent sights.

Beginning at Turweston Aerodrome, Westbury, the route heads out to explore the brilliant surrounding countryside by taking in fast and technical back lanes around Shalstone, Dadford and Abthorpe, before skirting around Towcester and moving north towards the first feed stop of the day.

The sportive has one climb to challenge you and this will come later on. For now, you can enjoy the areas swooping countryside as short and sharp climbs are met with rewarding descent action. As you cruise through the rural roads, youll be able to enjoy views around Farnborough Park, Burton Country Park, Litchborough Park and Boddington Reservoir.

When the Standard loop is coming to a close, Epic riders head out onto their own loop. This half features the most testing climbing action of the day and is a must for those really looking to get the most out of their day in the saddle.

Eventually youll reach Burton County Park, where the days true testing climb will separate the tired and the tenacious. This comes around 60 miles in, so will take some beating, but is followed by a rewarding rolling route back to the finish line, so will be worth the extra effort, and the commitment of taking on the extra circuit.

Wiggle Hawker Hurricane Sportive

Ideally situated in the Oxfordshire countryside, this ride will explore the Chilterns and it'll soon become obvious why it's an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The route will throw up a great selection of climbs to attack and plenty of fast descents to complement. The natural gradients of this area make for a demanding ride that will challenge riders from start to finish.

Efforts will however be rewarded with panoramic views across the English countryside, quiet roads and High5 fuelled feed stations to get you to the end.
