What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

An AMAZING location to start and finish a sportive right in front of the waters edge. This is a relatively short sportive which takes in some of South Hams most scenic routes and takes you the whole way around the Salcombe estruary/ria. The route is ungulating and quite challenging but will the scenery will no doubt keep you distracted. As an added bonus you will take the ferry from East Portlemouth and finish the ride back in the Whitestrand Car Park.

This is one of the most amazing rides of the summer!!

The Wiggle Steeple Chase sportive does largely what it says on the tin. With a plethora of historic church steeples, we pit the task to you to traverse the tranquil lanes of Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Leicestershire along which the eponymous spires are abundant. However, despite this rides playful name, the terrain profile which comprises a series of peaks throughout the routes entirety is a sobering image

Starting in Huntingdon, just a stone's throw away from the historic university town of Cambridge, riders roll out on the ultimate Cambridge sportive from 7:30am. Soon after riders find themselves rolling along the punchy climbs and rolling descents throughout the Cambridgeshire sportive.

Normally known as the flat lands to locals, weve scoped out the best climbs that Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Leicestershire have to offer. These hills may not be the steepest, but with one ascent following the other the Steeple Chase doesnt offer up a great deal of respite, and you will be kept on your toes until the finishing line.

The summits, however strength sapping they may be, will afford you a vantage point from where to see the next steeple to chase, as you point your two wheels downhill and dip back into middle Englands leafy lanes.

The majesty of Malham Cove looks out over the Village of Malham and has been attracting visitors for centuries. For cyclists, it just happens that a classic road climb runs up the left hand side of the Cove. We have blended a visit to Malham with a loop back through the untouched gem Littondale, the hidden valley.

To start with, the ride skirts up the Wharfe valley and then through the Calendar Girls village of Rhylstone to Malham. The reward for reaching the top of the climb is sight of the impressive world famous limestone pavements. After crossing the bleak moor you descend to Settle for the caf stop. After the welcome break you join the route of the famous Etape du Dales and climb out of Stainforth past Pen-y-Ghent, one of the 3 Peaks of Yorskshire visited by the iconic cyclo cross race. A treat is now in store as the scenery to your right on the descent is majestic as you enter Littondale. You soon reach Wharfedale and head past Kilnsey Crag. To make this is a triple climb ride, the punchy Langbar awaits near the finish, although those with tired legs can easily miss this out if they wish.

A new twist on the classic sportive, the Hampshire Hills Beach Cruiser is a sportive with the atmosphere of a summer club run to the beach. Starting from Petersfield in hte shadow of Butser Hill, the route winds you up over the mighty South Downs, then sweeps through the pick of the twisting country lanes to the south coast, delivering you to the sea front at Hayling Island.
Once you hit the beach, you can relax, enjoy the sea breeze, and grab a bite and cuppa at the beach-side checkpoint. Our team will be there with a support station that acts as the finish for the Short ride, or your midway checkpoint for the Full Route. Thats it; if you rode the Short Route, your riding is done. All thats left to do is to enjoy the beach, maybe arrange to meet family or friends to spend a few hours before giving you a lift back to your car or back home.

If youre riding the Full Route, after your beach stop youll get back on the bike to make your way back up country to finish at the event base at Petersfield (where you started). In the spirit of the chilled theme of the day, were being nice to you though. The route back is a little shorter and more direct than the ride out; nobody wants to have the bulk of their ride in front of them after a cake stop or lunch at the beach! Oh, and yes you will be timed for this ride, but the time you spend at the beach stop wont be included in your overall time. Just make sure that you check in and out through the timing station and well deduct your beach time from your ride time in the final results. After all, a good day on the bike means only being in a hurry when you want to be, right?
