What you need to know about Road Cycling

Discover UK and International Road Cycling events. Featuring Sportives, Gran Fondos and Charity Bike Rides in our 2018 Cycling Calendar. Cycling is a hugely popular sport but can sometimes seem a closely guarded secret, there’s a lot of jargon and kit but once you pop, you absolutely can’t stop. It’s a great weekend activity, go with friends and cruise round city parks or country lanes, you’ll be addicted in no time.

Different road cycling event types

We sort our cycling events by Short (0-50km), Medium (50-100km), Long (100-200km) and Ultra (200km+). Most of these are Sportives. Here are some cycling event names defined:

  • Gran Fondo — a mass participation cycling event at least 120km long. A large event with closed roads, usually chip timed. People travel all over Europe to compete in these events.
  • Century — a cycle of 100 miles (160.9 km) or more within 12 hours, usually as a club sponsored event. A large event with closed roads, people can get there PBs here. Usually chip timed.
  • Sportives — most of the cycling events on our site are sportives, these are the most popular endurance cycling events. They’re held all over the world and rarely exclude traffic. They’re more relaxed and whilst people do go for PBs it’s a much more convivial atmosphere than the more formal Gran Fondo races.

A fun and (mostly) fear-free experience for the enduro-curious, younger riders or just those with not enough time for a full-on enduro weekend. Or even if you just fancy a good day of enduro fun.

Welcome to the second year of our introductory-level enduro race, designed to provide a sweet way into the joy of enduro racing. This is Enjoyro!

After last years success, we are devoting a whole day to this event in 2018 more riding time = more fun.

G-Form Enjoyro is for have-a-go enduro riders who might feel slightly intimidated by the perceived commitment, technical difficulty or length of normal enduro races. Its also intended as a taster event for both adults and younger riders (age 12 and older*). Dont worry if you spot people taking part who looks like their very experienced enduro types chances are theyre accompanying one of the kids or a less experienced enduropal. Theyre not there to hunt you down (unless theyre your own off-spring perhaps).

More than 100 miles lay in wait for a true Scottish sportive test on the Brewin Dolphin Ochil Hills Sportive. Exploring the gently undulating terrain of Fife, Perth and Kinross, this ride will take you to iconic areas around Glen Eagles, Knockhill and beyond on a days riding not to be forgotten.

Departing from the Lochore Meadows Country Park, the course begins to head north in to the Cleish Hills with a quick descent and some excellent views, shortly before arriving in Benarty Hill and Loch Leven. Looping around Loch Leven, the route aims for Milnathort, and in our first course split Short riders head east while Standard and Epic go north for Glen Farg.

After reaching the Bridge of Earn, the route turns west towards Dunning, at which point the Standard riders go back in a south-easterly direction and the Epic riders bear true south to Castlehill Reservoir. Its then a case of following the course arrows north, through the Gleneagles district and along the River Devon.

After the climb out of Gleneagles, youll head east through Auchterarder back to Dunning. From Dunning, a long climb out awaits before heading south to Kinross, after which the course cuts through the Cleish Hills for one final time, tackling the climb to Knockhill on the way back to the ride HQ, where a finishers medal and t-shirt wait for you.

As per last years event, you also have the option of signing up to the Velo Club. This option gives you everything the normal entry gives you, and you can still choose to ride any of the three routes available, but gives you a lot of extras.

The most hilarious race in the TweedLove program, with loads of fun and a challenging course providing big entrainment for riders and spectators.

Integrated right into the heart of the TweedLove on The Green Expo, so all the racing will take in the event arena down by the river, where everyones hanging out having a drink and some festival food, this event is going to be a cracker. Expect heckling, mad obstacles, cheering, more heckling, a beer barrel slalom, water pistols and a whole lotta crazy-ass riding.

As always, Love Cross is almost as exciting to watch as it is to enter. Bust Only almost!

Grit, gravel or whatever you call it want to try a cycling adventure into the lesser-known corners of the Tweed Valley? Everyone knows the Tweed Valley has fabulous roads jammed with stunning views and hardly any cars, and of course, we have a vast collection of world-class mountain bike trails spreading like veins through the hills and woodlands. But what lies between has been something of a secret pleasure countless miles of backcountry forest, dirt or drove roads taking the adventurous bicyclist to undiscovered corners of this beautiful land.

All you need is a spirit of adventure and a bike that can despatch the miles on a variety of surfaces, leaving the traffic far behind and often far below you.

Gritopia is a new event for adventure/gravel/backcountry, or whatever you want to call it, riders. With an event HQ in the TweedLove T On The Green event village, Gritopia will take you on a journey to many new places in the valley hinterland, with mile after mile of empty grit and gravel, and a few stretches of quiet tarmac linking it all up.

The course will be around 60km, all way-marked and youll also get a route map and feed station along the way. There will be some big climbs along the way lifting you to spectacular high roads and ancient trails.

Aimed at any bike rider whos up for an adventure, the event works as a first-time gravel event but will also have plenty of fun for the more experienced gravellist. You can do it on any suitable bike which means a mountain bike will be fine too, but a small-tired pure road bike will likely be a tad uncomfortable (and the gearing might be unhelpful in one or two places!).

Starting from Croft, NorthYorkshire, three routes will head out on some mostly flat country lanes, in amazing scenery, away from busy traffic, in the direction of Richmond - nothing too tough in the early miles. They will then climb away in the direction of Buttertubs on some little ridden roads, up through Swaledale. The medium route will tackle the killer 'Cote de Grinton Moor', whilst the long route will continue to drag forever upwards to the Buttertubs climb, which straight away, is steep! Its a long climb but the descent is an awesome one! 30 miles, 68 miles, 94 miles.

Yorkshire, for all of its natural beauty, is best explored by bicycle. A Tour de France Grand Depart and a subsequently founded Tour de Yorkshire pay dividends to that sentiment, proving that the rustic landscape is a perfect test for road cycling with its challenging climbs, equally rewarding descents and magnificent scenery.
We want to encourage young riders to enjoy the pleasure of cycling. That's why all riders under 16 years old only have to pay a small fee to cover the entry process. All under 16 riders must be accompanied by a paying adult. Valid ID will be requested on the day.

The Sigma Sports Ripon Revolution will send you riding through the famous landscapes Yorkshire that were part of this years Tour de Yorkshire route. As you set off from Ripon, youll see for yourself how the hills and pastoral roads made for a great bike race.

The first few miles start on an increasing hill incline, as well give you chance to warm up your legs before taking on the highest peak of the day fairly soon after rolling over the start line. This ascent is part of a four-strong line-up of climbs that follow one another, passing Masham then the Leighton Reservoir, eventually reaching High Ash Moor at the top to take in the breathtaking views across the surrounding area.

Youll be able to rack up some speed on the descent down to Lofthouse, which starts off steep and levels out, following the River Nidd to pass the naturally attractive Gouthwaite Reservoir before the next big uphill test, taking on the challenging climb of Greenhow Hill, just after passing through Pateley.

Once more, your efforts will be rewarded with a long and sprawling descent, offering some recovery time before its time to tackle the last two major climbs of the day, going over Round Hill and Brimham Rocks.

The hard work done, the remainder of the miles left until you reach ride HQ mostly lean downhill, so theres no reason not to empty the tank on your final push to earn a well-deserved finishers medal.
