My mom and I have been doing the Ridge Run for a few years now. It has become our own little Memorial Day tradition, and I'd say the same for most of the others there. It takes place each year on the Monday of Memorial Day, with a 10k starting at 8:00am and the 5k at 9:30am. There's a Youth Mile that starts at 8:10. The Tot Trot began at 10:30. Weather was in the 70s and sunny, but I felt the humidity wasn't nearly as bad as previous years, so that was a welcome treat.PROS:
+ You can register up to about a week before the race and they also have race day registration (closes 1/2 hour before each race starts).
+ They had multiple days for packet pickup; Tuesday, May 23 – Friday, May 27, 3pm to 7 pm at
Running Excels at 10328 S Western Ave; Sunday, May 29, 12pm to 3pm, Ridge Park at 9625 S Longwood Dr.; Race Day – Monday, May 30, 6:30am to 9am, Ridge Park at 9625 S Longwood Dr.
+ Packets included coupons for Running Excel, a Fruit & Grain Bar, papers/postcards/sheets for other races and local businesses, a plastic water bottle, your bib, and a short-sleeved blue shirt (Gilden Performance, unisex, I got a M which I usually get and fits fine).
+ There's plenty of residential parking available for race day. We parked maybe a half mile from the race and walked over.
+ I'm not sure if there are any official aid stations, but there was at least 1 that you passed twice with water. It could be the community doing, or the race, not sure. Either way, it's nice to have, especially since the weather is usually pretty warm.
+ the community really comes out for this - since the race is along mostly residential streets, the families of the homes come out to cheer, a bunch put out sprinklers/hoses, and it's really just a fun, family-friendly event.
+ The course is well marked with cones and course marshals. At one point the slower runners and walkers are still on the part of the course that is split for the fast runners coming back. It's cool to see them pass and to cheer them on. Before they come along, a police car comes by to make sure everyone is pushed over to the left.
+ They changed up the finish area a bit, and now once you finished you went straight through the runners chute with the food and drink. Before you had to finish and then move down the hill to get the food. No more need for the runners food slip that you had to rip off your bib (even though it was still on there this year).
+ Post race food = bottled water, bananas, apples, mini ham or turkey sandwiches, and Fruit & Grain Breakfast Bar (strawberry).
+ Post race there's food and beer (not included in registration), free Rainbow Cone in small containers (I got one of the last containers), music, jumpy house for the kids. There's also a parade at 10:30.
    + Results on Active.com.CONS:
    - I was a little disappointed in the move of the finish line this year. It narrowed down to the path going down towards the park. We were going a bit faster than some others at the end, and it made it hard to pass since it was so narrow. I'm sure there was a good reason for the move, but I personally wasn't a fan.
    - In previous years they gave medals to the top 3 of each age group. This year, only the top 3 men and women overall were regarded as winners (not sure if they received anything). This didn't matter for me, but I felt bad for my mom who usually receives a medal.

For the last two years I have had the opportunity to do the Ridge Run after a few years hiatus. And the last two years I have done the challenge where you run the 10K and then the 5K. The races are spread fairly apart but for the slower runners such as myself that is a bit of a challenge. The race is held in the south part of Chicago and it always amazes me how a neighborhood so close to me can be so different with their elegant houses, old town businesses, and quaint buildings. More than 3,500 athletes from around Chicagoland gather in Beverly/Morgan Park on Memorial Day to compete in the annual Ridge Run. The 10K run, 5K run/walk and Youth Mile are hosted by the Beverly Area Planning Association with Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park the presenting sponsor of the race. With cash prizes awarded to the top finishers, the Ridge Run is one of Chicago’s favorite neighborhood races, attracting elite runners as well as neighborhood families. Start times are 8 a.m. for the 10K run, and 9:30 a.m. for the 5K run/walk. The Ridge Run’s races start and finish at Ridge Park, 9625 S. Longwood Dr., Chicago. As a whole it is a fantastic race with plenty of crowd support from the locals, lots of water and Gatorade on the course and a course that challenges with hills and curves. The other part of the race is the porta potties and bathrooms at the start. There is plenty of them and the price for the 10K is 40 dollars and 5K is 35 dollars . For the challenge both races are only 60 dollars. That is quite a deal because not only do you get two shirts but you also get a medal at the end. My only recommendation is that if you are looking at doing the race for time get up in the front especially at the 5K. Unfortunately people who walk or go slow do not go to the side and walk more than 2 people across. So if you are looking for a great race to add to your neighborhood festivities check out the Ridge Run. You will be glad you did. For more information about next years race check out. This is a nice, fairly small race on the southside of Chicago – about 3,500 runners. The course takes your runs through the center of the beautiful, residential Ridge Historic District (with some really lovely old homes) and features the challenge of Chicago’s highest hill. There is plenty of parking on residential streets, you just have to walk a few blocks to the start, usually. The community support for this race is great – so many homeowners out cheering, spraying people with a hose, or having sprinklers set up to run through (Memorial Day weekend is generally VERY warm and humid). I always appreciate the kindness of these people, and their sprinklers! The race starts off a little downhill, then there's one steep hill around mile 1.75, then a nice downhill around mile 2.25, and then the last bit to the finish line is at a slight incline. I believe there were two water stations for the 5k – not sure what was available for the 10K.Things I like about this race:
    • Dry-tech shirt for 5k and 10k participants, new design every year
    • Community support/cheering
    • Friendly environment
    • B-chip technology (I personally prefer the chip on the bib, versus the D-tag)
    • Sponges soaked in ice cold water at the finish
    • Wide course (but if you are slower, when the faster runners are coming back to the finish, you'll need to move over to the left to let them through... that's at about the first/last .25 of a mile or so)
    • Nice views of historical homes
    • Nice variety of post-race food/drinks
    • Ice cream and hot dogs for saleDislikes:
    • The shirt sizes ran large
    • No wave start or pace line-up – it's not a huge race, but starting everyone at once always creates a bit of a jumble up until the first mile or so, plus, there's no way to really know where you should line up because there aren't any pace signs. You can read my recap here: http://heatherrunsthirteenpointone.blogspot.com/2014/08/ridge-run-5k.html

What you need to know about 5k Runs

A 5k run is the perfect distance for a beginner, it’s 3.1 miles and is the shortest and most popular road running distance. It’s a great goal to include in your fitness regime because there’s no pressure, people walk, jog or sprint so it’s totally up to you.

Find local 5k running races

There are loads of great 5k events, they tend to attract a great crowd and are very family orientated. From runs around the London Parks, to night runs and family events, you won’t be short of 5ks to choose from. Most marathon events such as London or Berlin have a 10k and a 5k race as well so it’s worth checking the larger events.
