I have a whole lotta love for Oakland and it was great to see a well organized event in The Town! From packet pickup parties during event week at Oaklandish and Sports Basement, to a cool shirt I actually wear outside of working out, to a route that explores scenic views of downtown, uptown, and Lake Merritt, this was a stellar event I look forward to coming back to. Did I mention the massive medal and mason jar I took home?! This race reflects the edgy, artistic, and progressive community it runs through.

I'm proud to day I've run this race since it first began in 2017! Oakland knows how to host a fun race, and 2018 brought several improvements. If you live around here, you might be a little surprised this race is only in its second year - Lake Merritt makes for the perfect setting for a 5K loop in downtown Oakland. But the race organizers are total pros, offering tons of social media promotions and four different packet pickups! Even race day packet pickup was a breeze, and the swag was great. Every bib had the runner's first name on the front, and the shirts are nice cotton t-shirts I would totally wear in public - they're designed by Oaklandish! And I have never seen a finisher's medal like #FEASTMODE before.2018 brought a few improvements over the first running of the OTT, in addition to the swag. In 2017, the race was partially routed over the relatively narrow Lake Merritt footpath, causing congestion issues I have come to expect during turkey trots. This year, the race was entirely on wide surface streets, actually allowing me to PR! And good thing - looks like they had over 2400 run this year. Days before the race, the Bay Area was covered in thick smoke for over a week after the devastating Camp Fire burned in Butte County. But long-awaited rains on Wednesday brought clear skies on Thursday morning, allowing us to breathe comfortably as we circled the heart of Oakland. I can't help but think this is a good sign for Oakland Turkey Trot, a race that's all about community, family, hope and food.
    • Did the event in 2018

Summary:Looking for a fun way to spend your Thanksgiving morning before you chow down with the family? The Oakland Turkey Trot has it all - costumes, food, music, games & of course running! Take a quick loop around Oakland's Lake Merritt & finish at a party! Packet Pick Up:The Oakland Turkey Trot, like its partner race - Oaktown Half, provide multiple packet pickup options - including an 'Expo in a Box' in which will make you a box of goodies along with your big & shirt! I always choose to pick up at the Sports Basement because you get an additional 20% off when you show them your bib. Plus, its a really big place, so there is plenty of room & never any lines when picking up your stuff. Everyone there is always super nice & helpful. Course Route: Course Route is very simple, 5K = one loop around Lake Merritt. Swag:You receive an awesome, soft t-shirt designed by local tee shop Oaklandish & a few other running goodies. Medal:This year's medal simply says FeastMode in all gold - like a b-boy chain. :)

I never ran a turkey trot before. I know, I know, I’m in the minority here. It’s difficult for me because I have lots to do on Thanksgiving morning and driving to run a race doesn’t fit. Thankful for the opportunity to virtually run the Oakland Turkey Trot through BibRave. The Bay Area holds a special place in my heart. I lived there for about 4 years. Originally, I was born in Chicago. In 1982, my parents took me to San Jose and lived there till 1986. That is an important reason why chose to run the Oakland Turkey Trot, virtually on Thanksgiving Day. The Oakland Turkey Trot partnered with the Oakland Mayor’s Office, Alameda County Community Food Bank, Oakland Public Schools, and local sponsors and charities. 100% of proceeds are going straight back to the Oakland community! This is huge and another reason this was the race I chose for my first turkey trot. They also had one of the coolest shirts designed and their #feastmode medal is pretty cool. I was impressed with the custom bib I received. See the photo I have attached to see the outfit I ran in on Thanksgiving morning.I would have loved to actually run in Oakland around Lake Merritt. The course looks so pretty. It was awesome how responsive Oakland Turkey Trot was on social media, especially Instagram. They posted a ton and liked my posts as well as shared some of posts and IG stories on their stories. It felt good to see that and get acknowledged. If you want to run a fun turkey trot with a whole lot of heart, then choose the Oakland Turkey Trot.

I wasn’t originally planning on running this race, but it was a part of a challenge after the San Francisco half. I’m so glad I did! It’s been two years and I still wear the green shirt because it was so cute, and I see them everywhere too! I ran the year that there was a torrential downpour of rain mid-race, which made things kind of tough. But the funniest part to me was the old hippies that came out and were cheering nonetheless. The only thing is I wished we were able to run a little part of the course on the Cal Bears campus, because that is such an iconic part of Berkeley. Regardless, I look back on this and think I had such a great race experience. I think others did too, because many of us were cheering on each other in the rough weather. Also, they gave out really great medals for completing the race series challenge, and even added a subsequent medal and challenge for the turkey trot in Silicon Valley (so I ended up with like 5 medals for 3 races). I would run this race, and this series again!

Expo: It was at a sporting goods store that had a difficult parking situation. After my husband had driven over 3 hours to get me to the expo, he was pretty frustrated. Anyway, the expo was a little confusing because half of it was on one side of the store and the other half was on the opposite end of the store. I suppose it's good planning for the store because you're forced to look at their merchandise, but it's still a little disorienting. There were lots of energy food and drink samples and other products available. Actually picking up my bib was pretty easy, and there were plenty of volunteers around to answer questions. I had purchased a BART bus ticket online to get from Fremont to the race the next morning, and the volunteer manning the bus ticket table was very helpful when I confirmed my ticket and the bus ticket time.
Race Organization: At 5:45 the next morning, there were several of us waiting for the bus at the BART station. The expected pickup time was 5:55, and by 6:15 still no bus. A lady who was at the bus stop called a race organizer and found out that there was no bus dispatched to come pick us up that morning. Now everyone had to figure out how to get their own transportation and where to park, with the race starting at 8AM. I had taken an Uber to get from the hotel to the BART station and was beginning to panic because it would be a 45 min drive to Berkeley. Thankfully another woman who had been waiting for the bus volunteered to take 4 other passengers with her in her own vehicle up to the race. We hopped in the car and made it to the race. She wasn't sure if there would be available parking. I had checked Parking Panda the night before and the closest spots were over a mile from the finish line. We were all surprised to see that there was plenty of parking available at Berkeley High School, which was very close to the start/finish line. I made my way to the bag drop off, and there were a few volunteers taking bags. The section where my bag was supposed to be placed, based on my bib number, had no volunteer supervising the area, but two other bags were already there against the wall. I left mine there and hoped for the best. As for the rest of the race organization, it was mostly good. The pacers were easy to find. There were lots of friendly volunteers. My only other complaint was that I had difficulty seeing the turn on to University Ave immediately after the aid station and before Mile 8. I didn't see where the people in front of me went, and it sort of looked like I was supposed to go straight. Well, I followed the crowd until I saw a sign for Mile 11 and knew I was lost. I turned around and sprinted back to the aid station and added about an extra half mile to my total run distance. Once I got clarification on the direction I was supposed to go, I began sprinting again to try to make up for lost time. Big mistake. I started feeling pain in my knee but continued pushing myself harder than I should have. I never caught back up, and by the time I reached Mile 10, I was half limping.
Aid stations: Plenty of aid stations with lots of volunteers.
Course scenery: We ran through downtown Berkeley, but most of the race was through residential areas. We also ran down and back along Frontage Rd., which would have given us a great view of the water. Unfortunately, there was a torrential downpour during more than half of the race, so we couldn't really see too much. I'm sure it would have been gorgeous with the sun out.
Parking: As I mentioned earlier, it was terrible at the expo. Everything close to the race was sold out online, but there was surprisingly parking at the high school.
Elevation difficulty: Some hills, but nothing too steep.
T shirts/SWAG: The shirt and medal were pretty nice. I earned the SF/Berkeley Challenge Medal too. It's an awesome spinner medal! Talk about some serious bling!
Overall: Despite the parking difficulty at the expo, the missing bus, the pouring rain, missing a turn, and getting a possible knee injury, I had a good time. There were lots of friendly people from town standing in the rain and cheering us on. The other racers all cheered each other on during the out and back stretch along Frontage Rd. Everyone just seemed so nice, supportive, and happy, which is what helped make this race so enjoyable for me. I would definitely recommend this race to someone living around the Bay Area.

If you a course with lots of variety, the Berkeley Half is for you! From the downtown historical streets, to the vistas from the homes up in the hillside, the Berkeley Half even rewards runners with the final miles ran along the ocean. Great community spirit - lots of cheering and aid station support! Finish line festival full of terrific swag, photo op backdrops, and samples from big named vendors. The high quality dri fit shirts are a fitting green color. The expo is small and community minded - intimate and helpful. This race has a small town feel with the backing of a big city race. Highly recommend!
