What you need to know about Running

Running is the world’s most accessible sport. Park runs, colour runs, 5k, 10k, half marathons, marathons and ultras — all you need is a pair of trainers and off you go. Running events are hugely popular on Let’s Do This and it’s a sociable sport, so get some friends involved and achieve something extraordinary.

If you’re starting small, the 5k and 10k events are great fun and definitely worth doing even if you’re training for a bigger challenge further down the line. Getting used to the atmosphere of an event is important. You’re so much more likely to hit a better time if there’s a crowd cheering you on, people in fancy dress and a big celebration at the finish line.

Starting on 1st September 2015, Ben Smith famously set off on a journey of a lifetime to complete 401 marathons in 401 consecutive days. His feat made headline news and as well as encouraging almost 10,000 runners to share in his journey, Ben raised over 330,000 for two anti bullying charities and raised the much needed awareness of bullying in the UK.

Ben's adventure may be over, but his journey is not complete and the work continues to carry on the legacy of The 401 Challenge. The setup of The 401 Foundation which offers grants to grassroots projects that focus their efforts on building confidence and self esteem along with tackling mental health and self development issues for all ages is that legacy.

So, why not join us for the return of this fantastic event and get involved with The 401 Foundation through their second Festival of Running? The Festival will in the spirit of The 401 Challenge, appeal to runners and non runners, of all ages, sizes and abilities. With a choice of races for the youngsters as well as 5k, 10k and half marathon distances available. Why not test yourself and take on The 401 Foundation Challenge and complete a series of four distance events including the 401 6.1km to complete the marathon distance. You will also receive a special challenge medal! All routes take place in and around the beautiful location of Portishead near Bristol, Ben's home town.

The Saturday event will kick off with the 401 5k, followed by The 401 500m, The 401 One Mile Dash and The 401 Half Marathon. Followed by The 401 After Party, with food and music! Come dressed in your favourite bright clothes and light accessories to help illuminate the course! The brighter the better, be creative!

Sunday will see The 401 10k, as well as a chance for the Young Runners to do the double and complete the 500m and One Mile Dashes. And for those who have entered the festival will finish the weekend with the new 401 6.1km to complete the iconic marathon distance!

Bespoke medals on offer to all finishers plus prizes and trophies available for leading runners in all races, plus top three overall male and female for those who enter The 401 Foundation Challenge!

Ultramarathon events in Bath August 2018

The Mendip Way has to be one of the South-West's best-kept secrets. Like the Cotswolds' slightly more streetwise, alternative cousin, the Mendip Way features the spectacular Ebbor and Cheddar Gorges, the brutal climb up to Crook's Peak, incredible views over the Somerset Levels and to the circular Cheddar Reservoir, and then England's smallest city, Wells, with its magnificent cathedral.

Starting at the Market Town of Frome (for the whole of the Mendip Way) or from Wells (for the West Mendip Way only) you will run through a real smorgasbord of Somerset scenery. If you like hills then you will find plenty to enjoy here, but either way, you will be amply rewarded for climbing the hills with views to breathe life into tired legs and then a downhill cruise to help get your strength back. Some particularly scenic parts of the course are Cranmore Tower (the highest point on the whole route), the amazing panoramic views from Wavering Down, the quarries, and forests of Black Rock Nature Reserve, Ebbor Gorge and the lush pine forests of Rowberrow, but this route is absolutely jam-packed with stunning locations.

England's longest river path from the source of the Thames in the Cotswolds, to the Thames Barrier in Greenwich, a distance of 184 miles. The challenge is to complete the entire length over a four day period. The Thames Challenge is the 'Sister' event of The Severn Challenge. Each daily Ultra - Cotswold Ultra, Oxford Ultra, Windsor Ultra, Richmond Ultra - can be done individually. 10-13 August.

The BRC Thames Challenge

First stage of the 4-day Thames Challenge, which can be done as a single one-day Ultra. 45 miles from the source of the Thames through the Cotswolds, taking in several meanders, pretty bridges and locks. Competitors of the Thames Challenge & the Cotswold Ultra, must arrive at Kemble Station for registration and equipment checks.

After a short trek from Kemble Station, along the Thames Path to the source, competitors retrace their steps back to Wysis Way then continue on The Thames Path through Neigh Bridge Country Park and on to Manor Ho.
Crossing back and forth over a couple of bridges you pass Lower Mill Nature Reserve to the right, Aston Keynes and onto Cricklade the first township of the Thames.
From Castle Eaton village the route strays from the river until Blackford Farm where it re-joins the Thames briefly before again departing over meadows until meeting again just before Lechlade.
Taking in several meanders, pretty bridges and locks, going through Shifford Lock, and Newbridge, eventually arriving at Bablock Hythe which is the conclusion of The Cotswold Ultra.
