What you need to know about Running

Running is the world’s most accessible sport. Park runs, colour runs, 5k, 10k, half marathons, marathons and ultras — all you need is a pair of trainers and off you go. Running events are hugely popular on Let’s Do This and it’s a sociable sport, so get some friends involved and achieve something extraordinary.

If you’re starting small, the 5k and 10k events are great fun and definitely worth doing even if you’re training for a bigger challenge further down the line. Getting used to the atmosphere of an event is important. You’re so much more likely to hit a better time if there’s a crowd cheering you on, people in fancy dress and a big celebration at the finish line.

Choose Malawi and you'll be joining us on the run of a lifetime in the home of distance-running. Not only will you spend the week on the shores of Lake Malawi (don't forget your cameras for those epic sunrises and sunsets), you'll also have time to meet some amazing projects really making a difference to the communities you will be running through and alongside. Empower yourself and use the power of running to help change lives forever.

For the first few days you'll get stuck into a variety of projects, then after resting up on day 5, you'll join hundreds of locals for the inaugural Malawi International Marathon!

ITINERARY

Day 1:
Arrive on day 1 and there'll be a big Impact Marathon hug waiting for you when you arrive at Lilongwe Airport. From there we'll take local transport for the three-hour ride to our breathtaking Athletes' Village. Once there, after settling into your accommodation, we'll have our welcome meeting and talk you through what to expect from the week ahead. Then it's time for our opening night party - a big BBQ on the beach with volleyball, music, dancing and your first African sunset!

Day 2:
And now wake up to your first African sunrise! You will have a full day spending time with the projects and people youll be supporting, really getting to know them and seeing the difference you have made first hand. In the evening well have time to share our stories around the campfire, maybe a beer or two and an early night ready for another days work.

Day 3:
The projects are varied and today youll be exploring some new activities: from digging dams, to installing energy efficient stoves we will be keeping you busy all day long - its our goal not just to have our runners working and helping in the community but also learning - about the projects, the difference your money makes, the challenges facing the community - our runners finish the Impact week understanding the difference they are making!

Day 4:
Today we rise with the sun again to finish our projects through the morning. We do mean it when we say there is lots to do!! In the afternoon our KidsRunWild Sports Day takes centre stage with all the children from the local villages bringing their boundless energy to the party. Of all the volunteering, we bet this is the most tiring, but almost certainly the most fun.

Day 5:
Put your feet up, relax, share stories - rest those legs. Well have some fun competitions through the day - who is up for our signature 'Build Your Own Raft meets Dragon Boat Racing? Catchy right?

Day 6:
The moment has come. Start line, time to run together as a community, in one of the worlds most outstanding location. This is the home of distance running, the sounds, smells and feel of today will stay with you for a life time. Forget personal bests and take it all in. There really is no other race out there like this! And at that finish line, well have one ridiculous party for you to dance the night away. Youve earned it.

Day 7:
The race is over and you'll have the usual aches and pains to remind you. To take your mind off it we have organised some incredible experiences that show you the very best that Malawi and Sub-Saharan Africa has to offer. Alternatively you can return home and transfers to the airport are included.

After 14 years we are making some changes to the format of the classic South Downs Marathon Day. The routes of marathon and half marathon themselves remain unchanged but we are taking out the marathon relay and introducing a trail 10km in Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

Regrettably, the lack of safe parking at two of the relay changeovers make us believe the relay is unsafe as most cars arrive at the changeover points in the same time frame and it has become a hazard and probably an accident waiting to happen. To make up for the loss of this popular element of the marathon we have brought in a 10km route entirely within Queen Elizabeth Country Park that will cover the first 2.5 miles of the half marathon route, divert on the Staunton Way and rejoin the return section of both the marathon and half marathon on the South Downs Way at the Buriton car park entrance.
