What you need to know about Running

Running is the world’s most accessible sport. Park runs, colour runs, 5k, 10k, half marathons, marathons and ultras — all you need is a pair of trainers and off you go. Running events are hugely popular on Let’s Do This and it’s a sociable sport, so get some friends involved and achieve something extraordinary.

If you’re starting small, the 5k and 10k events are great fun and definitely worth doing even if you’re training for a bigger challenge further down the line. Getting used to the atmosphere of an event is important. You’re so much more likely to hit a better time if there’s a crowd cheering you on, people in fancy dress and a big celebration at the finish line.

The Castle Howard Half Marathon will see competitors undertake 2 laps of a spectator friendly almost entirely off-road 10.5K circuit.

Starting on the North Lawn, a few yards from the main entrance to the castle, competitors initially head downhill towards the Boathouse and Lake before circumnavigating the enchanting woodland garden of Ray Wood. The next 5K is on a network of estate tracks and bridle paths that wind their way in a clockwise direction, always in sight of the impressive Mausoleum, passing through the ancient Bog Hall, Spring Wood, Alamo Trekking Centre and High Gaterley Farm.

At the 7K point and just after the well stocked Feed Station, competitors enter the aptly named Pretty Wood passing the Temple of the Four Faces and a couple of curious pyramids. The last 1.5K of the route builds through the formal gardens of the estate starting with New River Bridge and moving onto the South Lake, The Atlas Fountain and the South Lawn.

A final, cruel, climb to the top of Ray Wood is a precursor to a view of the Finish Line from the reservoir at the top of the hill. Lap 1 complete, runners then rejoin the same circuit for their second before entering the 500m long spectator lined finishing straight, crossing the finish line with the world famous castle backdrop, to receive their medal and classy finishing line banquet!

With the old English name of Elmeslac, Helmsley predates the Domesday Book. It was first settled in around 3,000 BC and small farming communities lived in the town throughout the Neolithic period, Bronze and Iron Ages and into Roman times. The lands around Helmsley were held by William the Conquerors brother. You can still visit the ruins of the Norman castle, and see ancient oak trees in Duncombe Park dating from this time.

The oldest surviving house in Helmsley is the medieval Canons Garth, the vicarage. The Norman castle, dating back over 900 years, evolved over the centuries, from a mighty medieval fortress to a luxurious Tudor mansion, to a Civil War stronghold and a romantic Victorian ruin. It is open all year round for visitors to enjoy, under the care of English Heritage. The Walled Gardens also enjoy a historic past, tracing their roots back to 1759.
