What you need to know about Ultramarathon Running

An ultramarathon is any running race longer than a traditional marathon of 26.2 miles. Most of them take place on trails, often surrounded by spectacular scenery, and involve continuously stuffing your face to keep your body going mile after mile. At the extreme end, ultras can involve running more than 300km over multiple days through mountains, deserts, jungles and snow. But if this is your first ultra, you might want to start with something a little shorter, like a “gentle” 50km.

Reebok Ragnar So Cal is happening on April 6-7, 2018. This race is one of the most popular in the series and for good reason! Starting in Huntington Beach, teams of 12 (or 6) will run relay-style along bike paths, coastal trails and boardwalks with million dollar views of soaring birds and crashing waves.

This 200-ish mile party doesnt stop when the sun goes down at Dana Point. Under a bed of stars, runners continue their journey through the night. On Saturday, runners pass through famous beach towns that would make any surfer jealous; Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, La Jolla and Mission Beach.

From beach exchange to beach exchange, Reebok Ragnar So Cal naturally ends next to the Pacific Ocean. Beaming with accomplishment (and dazed from lack of sleep) teams celebrate, and party to the sounds of crashing waves.

Ragnar Relay Trail Richmond

Chesterfield, Virginia, US

This remarkable event challenges up to 40 teams of two or three ultrarunners running together as duos or trios for the duration, NOT in a relay to tackle an unimaginable traverse of Southern California deserts and mountains. The route covers 81 miles (130km) from Salton City (elevation 234 feet / 71m below sea level) to Palomar Mountain, the almost tallest mountain in San Diego County (elevation 5500 feet / 1676m.) Eight of the 81 race miles pass through Anza-Borrego State Park on a single track trail known as the California Riding and Hiking Trail from near Borrego Springs to near Ranchita, creating a race route which is a mix of road and trail. There is a total elevation gain of over 9000 feet (2740m).
