The Ice Ultra – 2019Porjus, Norrbottens lu00e4n, SE

This is Swedish Lapland. Laying inside the Arctic Circle its Europes last remaining wilderness and the heartland of the indigenous Smi people. This area, Jokkmokk municipality, an area the size of Wales but with a population of only around three thousand, can experience day time temperatures as low as -20 degrees at this time of year and the days are short.

Youre standing in snow, surrounded by seemingly endless pine forests scattered with frozen lakes. White-capped mountains dominate the horizon. All around you is silent and peaceful broken only by the crunch of your steps in the snow as you make your way through 230km of this UNESCO world heritage area. As darkness descends at the end of each day you can expect to feel like the only person on the planet.

This is the Ice Ultra.

A 230km race split into 5 stages taking in Arctic tundra and frozen lakes all set against a back drop of white topped mountains.

The days are short and the course is long; runners should expect long periods running in darkness, following a marked route by head torch, under skies free of light pollution and filled with stars and sightings of aurora.

As a self-sufficient race you are responsible for carrying your entire kit, including food, safety equipment and a minimum of 1.5 litres of water which can be re-filled at checkpoints along the stages. Youll need some specialist gear to take on the conditions the Arctic Circle can throw at you.

Accommodation each night is provided by way of remote huts and teepee tents with open fires for warmth.

The Imber UltraWestbury, GB

The Imber Ultra Marathon is a trail run of approximately 33 miles. It starts at the Leighton Recreation Centre in the town of Westbury at the north west of the Imber Ranges.

Over the first couple of miles runners ascend the escarpment of Salisbury Plain, then follow the Imber Range Perimeter Path in an anti clockwise direction.

In the first 10 miles they pass round the town of Warminster and a number of iron age hill forts on footpaths. Then they run on metalled roads, bridleways and tracks east then north.

On the way they pass through some of the most remote parts of southern England, apart from a German village around the halfway mark! The final 10 miles are westward along the north side of the training area. Here the going is good on roads or big tracks, but it will be against the usually prevailing wind to add to the challenge. The final couple of miles include the biggest descent of the day, back to the finish at the Leighton Recreation Centre.

What you need to know about Ultramarathon running

An ultramarathon is any running race longer than a traditional marathon of 26.2 miles. Most of them take place on trails, often surrounded by spectacular scenery, and involve continuously stuffing your face to keep your body going mile after mile. At the extreme end, ultras can involve running more than 300km over multiple days through mountains, deserts, jungles and snow. But if this is your first ultra, you might want to start with something a little shorter, like a “gentle” 50km.
