Millerton Lake Triathlon, Duathlon, 5K & 10K
Friant, CA, United States

The Millerton Lake Sprint Triathlon has long been known as a great "first lake swim" triathlon, and a warm up for the upcoming season. But don't let the bike and run distances fool you, there are a few steep hills on the ride, and the trail portion of run is a challenge.

More of a good thing... The Olympic Distance has a more challenging swim, two loops of the bike course, and two loops of the run course with a trail run heading out, a paved road coming back and beautiful Millerton Lake as the backdrop.

A USAT membership is required for the Triathlon, (but not the 5k) If you do not have one, you can purchase one during the registration process.Total participation at this event is capped at 250. Register before it is sold out.

The Olympic distance Surf City Escape Triathlon will begin with a challenging 1-mile swim in the Pacific Ocean, entering through the same beach break as the world renowned U.S. Open of Surfing. Triathletes will swim along the shoreline with the backdrop of the world famous Huntington Beach Pier. • Did the event in 2016

I wanted to write a quick race review on the Springs Back Duathlon because it was a very fun race and it deserves the recognition. The race is in its fourth year and is organized by the local i Tri Event Productions. I’ve done a few other races with them and have had good experiences. When I signed up for the race it was a triathlon, but that was before Houston and the surrounding areas were slammed with 10-20 inches of rain in the month leading up to the race. The excess run off caused poor water quality (and apparently some increase in reptiles!) in the lake where the swim was to be held causing Race Director Tina Whiteford to move it to a duathlon the day before the race. The communication from Tina ahead of the race was great and she definitely made the right decision by eliminating the swim portion of the race. By adding a run prior to the bike and turning it into a duathlon, she really made the most of the unfortunate conditions. Both run courses and the bike course had excellent course support along the way. Turns were well marked, intersections were policed and there were multiple water stations on the second run. While the bike course is not completely closed, it felt very safe and the roads were not crowded. The first and second run course meanders through the Cross Creek Ranch subdivision in Fulshear, Texas. The first run followed the main road out and back. The second run goes into the subdivision and follows a bike/run path around some natural areas. It is very pretty. The bike course leaves the subdivision and takes the farm roads around Fulshear. It always amazes me how remote it feels even though you are just minutes away from the fourth largest city in America. There were wildflowers still in bloom in some fields and quite a few horses and other animals in the ranches surrounding the county roads. It is a very nice place for a bike ride. The post-race party had all the key ingredients: beer, food, water, post-race massages and an award ceremony. The weather was nice and it was fun to hang out and celebrate with the other duathletes after the race.Overall, I’d highly recommend this event. I briefly chatted with Tina after the race and she mentioned that she is considering adding a duathlon to her race calendar in 2017. Based on how much fun this was, I’d highly support it!For more info on my review, a race recap and pictures, visit my blog: http://www.pathtotri.com/race-review-2016-springs-back-duathlon/

It’s been three weeks since my first Olympic triathlon, the Springs Back Triathlon in Fulshear, Texas. I previously posted about my personal experience and all of the excitement that came with my first Olympic distance race. Today, I want to tell you about the overall race experience. Choosing a triathlon to compete in can be difficult as there aren’t any comprehensive Yelp-like sites to help in your search. Hopefully this review will provide some insight into the Springs Back Tri and it’s organizer, i Tri Event Productions, so you can feel confident signing up for one of their future races.Read the rest of the review at http://www.pathtotri.com/race-review-springs-back-triathlon/

This race is held in the Master Planned Community Cross Creek Ranch. The organization that holds it is ITriEvents. I had entered the sprint distance race at the time because I was still new to Triathlons. Overall it's on OK event and a good race for locals to participate in.The swim is in the front lake at Cross Creek and the sprint distance starts halfway down the lake from shore and swims to the Transition area. The Olympic distance race goes out and back from the same point along the main road across the street from transition. The bike route is usually very similar each year. In 2014 I crashed on a turn and was taken care of at the finish by the medics who were on site as soon as they saw I was a little beat up. With the bike course I never saw any indication that the Olympic distance racers had a different route and this could have been because the sprint race started after the Olympic racers were out of the water and they stopped directing bikes that way. Fast forward to 2016 where I was spectating for several team mates who were doing the race we had our lead guy get directed down the sprint course causing him to be DQ'd after finishing the race. During my race I did see were the two routs come together. The road was setup to split the lane with cones to merge the two sets of riders. The downside was the police working the intersection must not have been comfortable with it because they stopped the sprint racers until a group of the Olympic racers passed rather than let them make the turn and merge in. If you enter this race be aware of the rout and where it is suppose to split. Use google maps to identify the route because the maps provided are often shown with too little detail to really tell where your riding. If the map is provided and the route wasn't changed for some reason. I've raced several events with ItriEvents and this is a regular occurrence. The run takes place on the nature paths throughout the community. For the most part there is only one way to go and no thinking is required. When you have two races of different distances it's not always clear which is the correct path and people often go the wrong way. I've seen the race director on the course directing runners at the split off areas but this isn't always the case. Some times you only turn on the first lap and on the second lap you may cross the road to the other side. It's not always as clear as it should be.Awards:
The event organizer takes some time to get the awards ready and they are often presented long after the published time. This isn't so much an issue since it is a morning event but it is a regular occurrence. This particular year awards were not available for all the finishers. I don't recall if it was only certain groups or everyone. I had to get mine a week or so later during the packet pickup for another race. For clarity this was the top 3 finisher awards in the age groups. The finisher medals were handed out as you finished.
