3M Half Marathon route

3M Half is a fun and fast stand-alone half marathon boasting one of the fastest 13.1-mile courses in the country. You’ll enjoy a point-to-point course with mostly downhill running, run past some of Austin’s finest locations, and finish downtown near the Texas State Capitol.

The 3M Half Marathon course will be open for 4 hours. Participants not maintaining the pace to finish within this time will be directed to get onto the sidewalk by race officials and the finish line will not remain open beyond this finishing time. This is an 18 minute per mile pace.

The Twenty-Six Two pacers will help you achieve your 3M Half Marathon goals and act as a rolling finish line all the way to the real finish line! They’re here for you, whether your goal is a personal record or simply to cross the finish line. Our Pace Group Leaders are extremely experienced runners and selected based on their previous running and/or pacing performances. They know what it takes to hold a steady pace and provide a great race experience for their “Pace-ees.” Below are a few highlights about the team.

  • Participation is FREE to all pacers and no registration is necessary.
  • We will have pace groups for the following times: 1:30, 1:35, 1:40, 1:45, 1:50, 1:55, 2:00, 2:05, 2:10, 2:15, 2:20, 2:25, and 2:30.
  • There will be a “Meet the Pacers” area at the expo where you can meet the group and ask questions.
  • To meet up with the pacers on race day, look for them next to the “Pace Time” signs in the starting area holding up signs with the finishing times printed on them. They will be wearing Pacer singlets and carrying the pace signs. Try to meet up with your pace group at least 15 minutes before the start of the race.
  • Five to 10 minutes before the start, your pace group leader will give you their final instructions. This may include any adjustments being made to the pace due to course conditions. This is another great opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.
  • Water station philosophy, regarding whether the pace group will walk or run through it, is up to the pace leader. Each pace leader will let you know their strategy for getting back together after a water stop. Be sure to check with your group leader prior to the start if this is important to you.
  • We want you to run your own race. If you feel great on race day and want to catch the next group, we’ll cheer you on. If it’s not your day, slow down and wait for the group behind you. And if you want to just fall in and match strides with your pace group leader, we’re sure to appreciate the company!

Join us on Sunday, January 19th, a parade of participants take to the scenic streets of Austin to run “the fast half.” One of Austin’s largest road races, the 3M Half Marathon presented by Under Armour showcases some of the greatest sites this city has to offer. It also captures the vibrant energy that invigorates runners and spectators alike. While 7,500+ participants will hit the ground running that morning, thousands more will be spectating, cheering, and encouraging those runners, giving off the ecstatic energy of a 13.1-mile parade.

If you’re a runner, get your friends and family to come out to support you and the other runners who are in this with you. If you’re an Austinite, this is your opportunity to showcase the best city in America! This race draws runners from across the country who have come to see what Austin is all about – the iconic sites, the delicious food, and the great community that brings out the best (and the fastest!) in people.

While we want spectators throughout the course, we’ve located some of the best “cheer points” for you. With planning, you can easily hit multiple points in the course of the race. If you want to catch a runner at different points on the course or find out their projected pace, consult the maps and street closure information and make a plan.

The (First) Downhill Stretch | Miles 4-8
As the runners find their stride in the first few miles, the Shoal Creek and Allandale neighborhoods are a perfect place to stake out and watch as runners get into their grooves. CLIF Bar will have a CLIF Shot Energy Zone set up along Great Northern Blvd. at Hunt Trail, near Mile 7. Plenty of parking on neighborhood streets make it easy to get in and out. Cheer runners on at the halfway point – encourage them that it’s (almost) all downhill from there!

On Cruise Control along 45th | Miles 9-10
The 45th Street stretch is a great place to catch the runners as they make their way into the final third leg of the race. Parking is available along the side streets of the Rosedale neighborhoods.

Fuel: Stinson’s Bistro, Upper Crust Bakery (Burnet at 45th Street), Starbucks (4400 N. Lamar)

Red River | Mile 11
Run through the UT campus with the views of the UT tower and DKR stadium.

Fast Finish | Mile 13.1
Finally, of course, once you’ve shared the love out on the race route, it’s worth coming down to the finish area on San Jacinto, just east of the Capitol. There’s live music, awesome local food trucks and, of course, the finish itself. Cheer for runners as they cross the finish line. They will love to see you there!
Join the 3M Half Marathon volunteer team to help make the run a successful community event! Your volunteer time benefits the 3M Half Marathon runners, walkers, guests and staff by providing help in a variety of areas, including start & finish line, packet pick-up, information and water distribution. And just as importantly, volunteers provide the energy and enthusiasm to help encourage our runners to the finish line!

Our volunteer shifts will take place at the Expo and on Race Day. Volunteers will receive an official volunteer t-shirt, refreshments during the shift and a huge thank you from the race team!

By helping to make the 3M Half Marathon a successful community event, our full team of volunteers, staff and supporters also help create economic opportunities for the City of Austin and Central Texas by way of the number of runners and guests visiting Austin for the race.
