Event day logistics
Day One: Saturday
Arrival on the island of Pico and hotel check in. In the afternoon, you'll enjoy a 10k volcanic coastal trail run (slow-paced!) to explore some of the island. In the evening you will head out for a lovely welcome meal with the group.
Day Two: Sunday
After an optional pre-breakfast stretch and yoga session, you will pack up your gear and head out on a gorgeous 10k route along a UNESCO world heritage trail. You will run through vineyards on our way to the Forno dos Frades with amazing views of Mt Pico and out to the ocean. The group will stop for lunch in Santa Luzia with an afternoon excursion to visit the Gruta das Torres (caves of towers), which is an extraordinary lava cave.
Day Three: Monday
After an early breakfast this morning you'll pack up our kit and load it into the support vehicle, transferring to the island of Faial by ferry.
Arriving at Horta you’ll head to the centre of the island where you begin a 21km trail run to the impressive Caldeira. From this point, you pick up the 10 Volcanoes trail - an immersive trail that climbs and traverses volcanoes towards the Capelinhos lighthouse at the western tip of Horta. This will be a stunning but challenging day, with plenty of rest stops for lunch and nutrition.
After exploring the colonial sites of Horta town, you will head back to Pico for the night.
Day Four: Tuesday
Enjoy a day off running, with a hike to the Lajido vineyards. This 9k hike covers winding trails out across the volcanic landscape. After, enjoy a wine tasting and lunch at the vineyard.
The afternoon will be spent out on the water for a whale and dolphin watching experience. The trip lasts 3-4 hours and then you will return to the hotel for the evening to relax.
Day Five: Wednesday
You move islands today as you bid farewell to Pico and say hello to São Jorge!
Packing up your gear you’ll head to the ferry and journey the 15km across to São Jorge which takes almost 2 hours. Once on dry land it’s just a short drive to the boutique hotel on the southern coast of the island.
There is no running schedule today and it’s a good opportunity for you to rest and relax by the pool.
Day 6: Thursday
Thursday will be spent on the trails with a fantastic 17k twin peaks trail run. You start at the base of Pico do Pedro, before picking up a skyline trail that flows wonderfully to the Pico da Esperanca which nears the highest point of the island.
From here it’s downhill all the way as you cross the lava fields of Faja do Ouvidor your finishing point for the day. There are some beautiful natural pools which make it a perfect spot to swim after and chill after an amazing day.
Day 7: Friday
Enjoy some breakfast overlooking the ocean before an easy downhill 10k trail starting at the Caldeira de Santo Cristo. The trail heads through forests until arriving at the Faja dos Cubres on the northern coast of São Jorge.
Then head back to the hotel to relax and enjoy a farewell dinner with the group.
Day 8: Saturday
Time to head back to the airport and say goodbye to the island.
