Rising up from the depths of Lake Chabot, the Bad Bass (a strangely kilt-wearing, bagpipe-playing Scottish bass with teeth) shows itself once again! Why is he Scottish? What is he doing in Castro Valley? How can he play bagpipes with his fin? We have no idea how to answer those questions. Why is he so bad-to-the-fishbone? Maybe he just knows how awesome the trails of Lake Chabot really are! Whatever the Bad Bass is doing here, we hope you'll join us at the beautiful Lake Chabot Marina in Castro Valley for the scenic Bad Bass 5K, 10K or Half Marathon!

Course Details

The 5K is entirely on paved trails. The 10K is about 50% paved trails and 50% fire trails. The half marathon is approximately 25% paved trails and 75% fire trails.

The 5K and 10K will essentially be out and back courses, while the half marathon is a loop.

All courses include rolling hills that are mostly runnable -- except for the climb up Live Oak for the half marathon and 10K that is best power-hiked!

The half marathon has a 4 hour time limit. Half runners must reach the 4th aid station (mile 10) by 11:30 am. This is a 20+ minute per mile page.

For half marathon participants who wish to hike the course and take more than about four hours, we will offer a "Hiker Start" at 7:30 am. Those starting at 7:30 should carry water as the first and second aid stations might not be 100% up and running, depending on the hikers speed. Hiker starts will not be eligible to win the race or for age group awards, but will be listed as official finishers in the Hikers Division and will still receive finisher medals.

Raceday Logistics

In order to avoid race morning stress and avoid having to arrive even earlier, we strongly recommend choosing the bib mailout option, or using the early pickup option (Forward Motion Sports, Danville - July 25th (10-7pm) and july 26th (10-3pm))

If you are unable to take advantage of those first two options, race morning pick-up will still be available, but you should aim to arrive 70-90 minutes ahead of your race start to account for lines.

Yes, there will be a sweat-check area and these will be checked in and watched over by a volunteer. Bags for storing your sweats will be available if you do not bring your own. Please do not leave valuables in your sweat bags -- we cannot be responsible for these items.

Unfortunately no. As much as we love dogs and running with our own, not everyone is comfortable being around dogs (even if leashed) and for reasons of safety (for those with two legs and four) we ask runners not to bring their dogs along for the race.

No. The race will be held, rain or shine. Courses may be modified to account for weather conditions.
