Route information
Get out for a stunning run up Mount Diablo this August. This is the perfect way to round out your summer and enjoy the beautiful views of the Bay Area and Mitchell Canyon. There will be a FREE Kids Fun Run at 7:50am!
If you are looking for an easier route with less hill climbing then perhaps the 4 miler is for you, but if you are looking for a bit more of a challenge then consider signing up for the half marathon (or even the 50k).
The course takes place largely on a dirt road up the side of the mountain, there will be portions of this race that will be on single track.
The 4 and 10 mile races will have between 400 - 2,400 feet of elevation gain, whilst the longer runs will range from 3,420 - 7,990 feet of elevation gain. These hills are not to be scoffed at so you better include some hill training in your schedule.
There will be fully-stocked aid stations every 3 - 5 miles. You can expect fresh fruit, salty snacks, assorted candy, water, and Clif Shot Electrolyte sports drink. It is highly recommended that runners carry at least 20 oz. of water between aid stations.
The course will be marked with ribbon approximately every 200 yards and color coded as follows:
  • 4 mile – Yellow (out/back along Mitchell Canyon)
  • 10 mile – Orange (turnaround at Juniper, 1st aid station)
  • Half Marathon – Orange (turnaround at Summit)
  • Marathon – Orange + Green Summit Loop + Pink Loop + Orange to Finish
  • 50k – Orange + Green Summit Loop + Pink Loop + Green Summit Loop (on return at 21 miles) + Orange to Finish
Course Surfaces
4 mile - (Elevation Gain 400', 100% Dirt Road)
10 mile - (Elevation Gain 2.420', 100% Dirt Road)
Half Marathon - (Elevation Gain 3,420', 21% Single Track, 76% Dirt Road, 3% Asphalt)

Headphones
Headphones are allowed on dirt road sections only. Please do not wear headphones on single-track trail, while crossing paved roads, when getting aid at aid stations, or while crossing the finish line.
Course Markings
The most important markings along the course will be the polka-dot flagging, which indicated a turn at an intersection. There will be at least two of these flags before a turn in the course, which will be placed before and on the same side as the required turn.
As you start to approach the intersections, please look for any polka-dot flags before turning. Waiting until you're in the intersection to determine the correct direction may be confusing and you may go the wrong way.
After you complete the turn, there will be orange and/or pink flagging indicating the correct route. We also hang blue ribbons at critical junctions indicating the wrong way. Blue is bad!
If you go 3-5 minutes without seeing your respective flagging, it's likely you've gone off course and should retrace your path until you find the course again.
Aid Stations
There will be fully-stocked aid stations every 3 - 5 miles. You can expect fresh fruit, salty snacks, assorted candy, water, and Clif Shot Electrolyte sports drink. It is highly recommended that runners carry at least 20 oz. of water between aid stations.
FAQs
Do I need to bring my own cup to the Diablo Trail Run?
Yes, in an effort to protect the environment runners are asked to bring their own drinking bottles and cups that can be filled up at the aid stations.
ChevronLeft
How hilly is the Diablo Trail Run?
If you are doing the 4 mile run then course is fairly flat, but if you are tackling one of the longer trails then it can be quite a hilly course and you should make sure you've got some hill training in before taking it on.
