Why Roger’s Run?

Roger the Elephant is one of the key figures in the legends of the Edgewater community. In the late 1800s Roger was a key attraction at the Manhattan Beach Resort which sat at the northwest corner of Sloan’s Lake. Roger would give rides to area children but one of those rides ended in tragedy. Edgewater legends are told about how Roger was killed and buried on the property at 20th and Depew which will soon be the Edgewater Public Market. 9News did some investigations and found that Roger in fact was not killed and was still at Manhattan Beach the next year.

We chose to name the Edgewater 5k after Roger because of his place in our community’s legends and stories. As Edgewater grows and changes, it’s important to lift up the history and stories of our community.
