Florida Halloween Distance Classic routes

Course Time Limits

We require that runners and walkers be properly prepared and trained to finish the Halfathon within 4 hours (18 minute/mile pace). Please note that 4 hours after the start, course support ((i.e. aid/water stations, volunteers, photographers, ambulance, course marshals, clocks, etc.) is not guaranteed. The 5k runners and walkers should be finished within the 4 hour time limit for the halfathon.

Course Highlights

Both races are staged entirely in Fort De Soto Park, recognized as one of the best beaches in the nation. The course features a loop for the first 3.1 miles of the race, bringing athletes back through the start line. The rest of the course is an extremely flat, out-and-back tour of Fort De Soto Park, mostly on paved recreational trails. With a start time about 40 minutes before sunrise to avoid warm weather, the first portion of the race will take place in the dawn. Sunrise should be directly ahead of our athletes before the turn-around at East Beach.

USATF Sanctioned

All our races are sanctioned and insured through USATF for runners, joggers, and walkers ONLY. Strollers, skaters, skateboards and bicycles are NOT allowed on the course during our races.

USATF Certification

Both courses have been precisely measured and documentation provided according to USATF requirements, certifying our courses as accurately measured.

Chip Timing

All official results will be based on “Gun Time” as per USATF rules. Chip times will be posted for our athletes’ review, but NOT used for scoring.

Kit List
TRICKS: Costumes Encouraged
Create unique costumes in the spirit of this festive holiday, but ones that will not adversely affect your performance. Or simply wear mismatched uniforms. Or orange and black.
Please help us help our athletes achieve their goals:
  • with registration and packet pick-up
  • at an aid station dispensing fluids
  • at the finish line handing out medals and bottled water
  • at the food and beer tent (must be over 18 to serve beer)
ALL our participants, athletes and volunteers alike, will enjoy a howling good time:
  • located at our nation’s favorite beach
  • typically ideal weather
  • post-race celebration, including hot pasta, cold beer, and live music
  • unique costumes worn by participants
  • costumes encouraged for volunteers, but not mandatory
  • Zorrel hi-tech shirts
If your friends or family members are coming with you, they can “participate” in your race by serving as a volunteer.

Or perhaps you’re an athlete who is not entered to participate for whatever reason – here’s an excellent opportunity to help your fellow athletes and socialize with them afterwards in a beautiful park setting on a very festive holiday.

There will be packet pickups and registration at Fit2Run in St. Pete and Tampa the weekend and weeknights before the race, as well as on race morning at Fort De Soto.
There will be 3 packet pickups the week prior to the race at the Fit2Run stores in Tampa & St. Petersburg. You can register for the race at packet pickup.

• Wednesday, October 23, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Fit2Run/Tampa
• Thursday, October 24, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Fit2Run/St. Petersburg
• Saturday, October 26, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Fit2Run/St. Petersburg
There will also be packet pickup and registration on race morning at Fort De Soto at 5:30 – 6:45 a.m.

We encourage you to pick up during the week to avoid long lines on race morning. You will need your ID. If you are picking up for a friend, please bring their a copy of their ID.

If you are picking up for a group, it helps us tremendously if you have all the names written on a sheet of paper. This will expedite the process and keep the line moving. Extra points if the names are in alphabetical order!

Do you get a t-shirt?

Though we try our best, we can not guarantee T-shirt sizes on race weekend. By picking up your packet earlier in the week, you increase your chance of getting the size you requested. The shirt size you choose when you register gives us an idea of how many Ts, per size, we should order. We place our order 3 weeks in advance of race day to allow for shipping and printing. We add a percentage to account for the runners who register after the order is placed. We hate to disappoint, but we don’t have a crystal ball to predict what size T-shirts the new registrants will require. Sometimes this skews our inventory. So, come early!

Is it a Walker-Friendly Race?
We welcome walkers! We require that walkers be properly prepared and trained to finish the Halfathon within 4 hours (18 minute/mile pace). Please note that 4 hours after the start, course support ((i.e. aid/water stations, volunteers, course marshals, clocks, etc.) is not guaranteed.

Due to our staging of this race entirely within a park and primarily on nature trails, we will NOT be offering an early walker’s start. All athletes will start at the same time in their respective races.

All walker-finishers will be rewarded with the Halloween edition of our unique “running starfish” gold medal.

All walkers will be eligible for our special Halloween Costume awards, regardless of finishing time.

Fitness Walkers are also eligible to be recognized as Florida Halfathon Challenge finishers.
