Half Marathon
The Harborside Half marathon course offers runners a beautiful lollipop loop course with scenic views of rural fields, salt marshes, and nature preserves! The race starts at an industrial park in Newburyport (40 Parker Street) with the first mile on flat, wide, and easy roads through the park before heading out onto some of the prettiest roads in the area.
From Mile 4 to Mile 6, you’ll run by a very large nature preserve called the Martin Burns Wildlife Management Area. You’ll then run through a small section of Newbury, past the ivy-covered buildings of The Governor’s Academy at Mile 7 before heading over the gorgeous Parker River Bridge and through the salt marsh.
Miles 9 to 12 will repeat Miles 1 to 3 and then you’ll venture down the Clipper City Rail Trail, a 1.3-mile paved running path through lush forests, all the way back to the finish at Michael’s Harborside, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the mighty Merrimack River and an awesome after-party (details below)!
Course Hills: This is a relatively easy course. The highest elevation is only 64 feet. There are no major hills and most hills are simply rollers that come and go quite easily.
There will be five water stops on the course, two of which will also have Gatorade and one will have energy gel: Mile 2.5, 4.5, 6.7, 9.7, & 12. We know that sometimes nature calls at the when it’s least convenient, that’s why we’ve put portable toilets near the Mile 12 water stop.
The course is USATF Certified.
5k

The finish is at Michael’s Harborside Restaurant, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the mighty Merrimack River and an awesome after-party (details below)!

DIRECTIONS, PARKING & SHUTTLE
Both the half marathon and 5k start at 9 a.m. at 40 Parker Street, Newburyport, MA 01950, which is 1.3 miles from the packet pick-up/finish location at Michael’s Harborside Restaurant.
THERE IS NO PARKING AT THE START LOCATION (40 PARKER STREET) OR MICHAEL’S HARBORSIDE. ANY CARS PARKED THERE WILL BE TOWED. All runners and spectators MUST park in downtown Newburyport and ride the free shuttle to the start location (or jog along the Clipper City Rail Trail). There’s a public parking lot at Waterfront Promenade Park. Street parking is also available throughout downtown
SHUTTLE SCHEDULE
Because the Start and Finish are in different locations, we’ll have a shuttle operating between Michael’s Harborside (Packet Pick-up & Finish) and 40 Parker Street (Start). Shuttle service begins from Michael’s Harborside at 8:00 a.m. to take runners to the Start. Shuttles come every 10 minutes. The final shuttle departs at 8:45 a.m.
Race-day Hint: There are portos located at the start – as well as the finish area.
If you’re up for a little extra running before the race, you can jog the Clipper City Rail Trail 1.3 miles straight to the Start. From the parking lot at Michael’s Harborside closest to the waterfront, look for the paved sidewalk that goes under the Route 1 bridge. This is the rail trail and it goes all the way to Parker Street. Follow the path under the bridge where it forks right then stay straight all the way until you see the huge, white windmill. The next intersection is Parker Street. Take a right on Parker Street and you’ll see the start arch and runners.
IMPORTANT SHUTTLE INFO
We have provided a handy shuttle system to the start, but it does not work if everyone waits until the last minute to load the shuttle. Please do not delay getting on the shuttle bus to the start. The start is equipped with 20 porto potties and a handy truck to hold your warm clothes or bag!
