Wilmington's rich history and premier location make it one of the most beautiful cities in the south.
In 2014, Wilmington was honored with the title of "Best Riverfront City in America" by USA Today's 10 Best reader's poll. In 2003, the city was designated by the US Congress as a "Coast Guard City." It is the home port for the USCGC Diligence, a United States Coast Guard medium endurance cutter, and the World War II battleship USS North Carolina, a majestic symbol of this country's hard-earned naval victories in World War II. Located across from the downtown port area, the ship is open to public tours. Other attractions include the Cape Fear Museum, the Wilmington Hammerheads United Soccer Leagues soccer team, and the city's world-class children's museum.
The PPD IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina triathlon will feature a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. This "point-to-point-to-point-to-point" event begins in Wrightsville Beach and takes athletes along the same fast channel swim. The bike course runs through the coastal countryside outside Wilmington, and the run traverses Greenfield Lake before athletes finish in historic downtown Wilmington across from the USS North Carolina Battleship.
The 2017 PPD IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina will will offer 30 qualifying slots to the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.
